Needing sage advice

Greetings all, It is with mixed emotions I post this post out but it needs to be done. A confluence of life challenges and opportunities has put me in a position where I need wind down my renovation efforts on my 1965 Chris Craft Constellation. I have been chipping away at it for a decade now and wi...

Re: Stain color opinion?

Not a filler stain, but I've achieved the color I wanted using Minwax Sedona Red. It's more of the red mahogany look vs the orange hue of the CC filler stain which I don't care for either. I used it mostly inside the boat but I did my rub rails with it and it looks great. Use a stain conditioner fir...

Re: Polishing Chrome

I have routinely use Mother's Mag wheel cleaner to get off the oxidation followed with Mother's chrome polish. Some might disagree but for mildly pitted or badly tarnished pieces I start with # 00000 steel wool. Be sure and clean it well after because the steel wool will rust quickly in weather or y...

Re: Water based varnish, anyone?

NO THANK YOU. Have recently tried TB Halycon and Pettit Sea Gold. Not pleased with either. The former comes out of the container pure white and despite being described as clear and glossy it's neither. Sea Gold is way better but still a matt finish, not bad as a base to build up come coats but I wou...

Re: Installing new cap rails

Hi Dan,

Yes, using your definition they are indeed toe rails and sit entirely on the deck from bow to stern. Regarding the white vinyl, I'm not going that route. Probably going to use either genuine wood strips set in epoxy or eva decking, still mulling that over. Thank you for your replies.~ R

Installing new cap rails

Greetings all, Over the winter I made all new cap rails for my 1965 43' Connie and am now looking forward to installing them. The part I am definitely not looking forward to is riddling them full of holes and creating nearly 500 bungs to cover the fasteners. The original rails had a fastener every 4...

Engine rebuilder

Greetings all, My local engine shop completed the long block rebuild of my CC 431 engine and it's ready to be re-assembled. I took delivery of the block and new components and had originally planned to do it myself but time constraints and lack of knowledge have made that impossible for the foreseea...

Re: Natuolex Vinyl flooring

Greetings all, This was on my Connie as well, in both the white and teak colors. Wondering what others might think of EVA decking as reasonable alternative? It comes in similar colors but is a bit more 3 dimensional than the Nautolex and seems reasonably priced. I'm giving it serious consideration a...

Survey - Really?

So.... my insurance carrier Chubb, has decided not to renew my "port" yacht policy unless I provide them with a recent survey on my 1965 43' Connie. One was done when I purchased it 9 years ago and before I started restoration. The boat was valued at $25k at the time when the market for wooden cruis...

Re: Finishing a new, bare wood stern pole.

I'd use a sanding sealer on bare wood. Assuming you want the traditional Chris Craft color, use Interlux Interstain # 573 Chris Craft Stain. This is a solid body stain and you can rub it on or thin it for brushing. I have always had good luck with thinning to a point where I can brush it on (think l...

Wax over Paint?

Greetings all, Last fall I finished (finally) painting Mistress, my 1965 Connie. I used Pettit Ship -N- Dec Alkyd enamel and am generally pleased with the results. Still a year away from launch but wanted to protect my handi-work. I can't yet wash her with a hose and soap (no water in the shed) so w...

Greetings all, Nice to be back!! I have a related question. I just finished painting my Connie with Pettit Shipndec alkyd enamel and it looks great!! Re: First Time Refinishing - '42 - Part I

It removes nearly all of whatever finish is in place (except factory original paint) which is then easily scraped of with a putty knife and bronze wool. I do use a heat g...

Keith,

I made the purchase but got side tracked by pulling out an engine for a rebuild. Its on this summer's to do list, I will let you know how I make out. The material looks like it will bend ok around the corner with some careful fastening. Good luck.

On my Connie it was used to secure the seat cushions to the bow seat. The decorative vinyl piping on the edge of the cushion slips into the grove and it allegedly keeps the cushion from flying overboard from the wind or in the event the old girl hit the top of her rpm's! I have never had that proble...

Is it possible you never had either tank or overboard discharge? My '65 Connie built for the Great Lakes was fitted out with electric toilets that had a 6 gallon holding tank built into the bottom of it. There are sea cocks in the bilge under both heads where direct discharge hoses would have led to...

I refinished the inside of my owner's cabin on my Connie using both Minwax stain and the Spar Urethane. I am very pleased with the results and the urethane is easier to handle in my opinion. After 3 coats it has adequate depth and is a bit more forgiving in terms of impact with stuff and people bang...

The Gougeon Brothers (West System)would tell you to drill out the hole slightly larger than your fasteners, fill it with epoxy then pre-drill for the fastener and drive it home. I have used this method for handrails and it works well.

On a related note...on cruisers the bungs under the painted surfaces were some kind of filler, any idea what the modern equivalent would be? I have been using epoxy with microfill material but would agree that its' probably not a good idea.

On a related topic...I am getting ready to put the new chine boards on both sides of my cruiser. Should I bed them in 5200, 4200 or Boatlife? I had planned on 5200 but the non fans outnumber the fans on here it seems and now I am second guessing. Thanks,

I would agree with fender board. I have set of 4 for my cruiser. I only use them when she is in the sling to keep the straps off the rub rails. Reduces the amount of crud transferred from the straps to the hull paint too.
