Re: Types of material for custom cover
Does the felt liner come as a separate piece or is it one piece with sumbrella on the outside and felt inside?

Types of material for custom cover
I've been searching the archives and still confused what type of material would be best for a custom boat cover. Ideally I'd like something lightweight with UV protection but also waterproof and non-scratching. I don't trailer the boat much but it does get sun while in the boathouse/carport and it w...

Pertronix ignition with 6V to 12V conversion
Hi all, I have a Model K with the IAY-4009 distributor and am using a Pertronix coil and points/condenser. I'm converting from 6V to 12V and I see they sell both a 6V and 12V product. Do I have to replace all the parts or can I still run the 6V parts on a 12V system?

Re: boat will start- won't stay running
Well after being convinced it was electrical I went back to step one and took the carb off again and adjusted the height of the floats back to spec and it works fine now. I always say- it's either spark or gas but sometimes you can't tell the difference.

Re: boat will start- won't stay running
Well the exhaust is fine and even the hot wire from battery to coil didn't help. I still think the distributor is grounding out somewhere after it starts. I'll take the whole thing apart this weekend.

Re: boat will start- won't stay running
Thanks Tom, I've had issues before where the bolt that goes through the distributor shorts out to the case and the boat won't start, but here it starts then stops. I thought maybe the points that are connected to that bolt via a copper band was shorting out but I put some cork gasket material behind...

Re: boat will start- won't stay running
I tried spraying starting fluid into the carb while it is dying and no change so I'm concluding it is not related to gas. And the way it stops by just going totally dead with no sputtering makes me think is somehow shorts out the secondary current once it is running. But once it stops it restarts ea...

Re: boat will start- won't stay running
Thanks for the reply. I ran a jumper from the pos battery to the + coil but still same symptom. Starts easy and then cuts off after about 4 seconds. I can even rev it up to 3000 rpm during the 4 seconds but still it shuts off. I'll try swaping out the points but they were new last year and seem good...

boat will start- won't stay running
Over the last 30+ years of owning two model K engines I've had about every symptom but this one is new. I push the starter button and it starts immediately at either 500 rpm or 3000 rpm but is stops 3-4 seconds later. I can hit the button again and same thing. probably tried 50 times and it never ra...

Brass plack engine number
I recently got a new Chris Craft brass plack/badge for my Model K (thanks Jim Straub) and I need to get the engine number pressed into it. There are a couple of numbers on my block and head, Anyone know which number goes on the plack?

Oil pan needed
Anyone parting out an engine? I have a need for a Model K oil pan. I believe I could use a pre war or post war size. Mine had a large crack and I prefer not to weld it. Not a part that usually breaks.

Re: Are all Model K oil pans the same size?
Thanks Jim, My boat is pre-war so I'm sure it must have the standard oil pan. Good to know there were two sizes, that is the information I was looking for.

Are all Model K oil pans the same size?
I have a crack in my Model K oil pan that was welded by a previous owner and it is starting to leak. Does anyone know if the oil pans are all the same size? Am I breaking the rules if I ask for a PM from anyone wanting to get rid of one ?

Engine tag missing
Just had my engine detailed and found the brass ID tag from the top of the manifold is missing. Does anyone know if there are any aftermarket replicas or replacements available? It's for a 1942 Hercules Model K.

Re: Spark plug wires with Electronic Ignitionn
That's exactly the answer I was looking for. I have a type 1 and it works well with copper so I will keep it that way. My childhood boat was a Glastron with a 55hp Homelite. All three of us kids took turns beating that boat and motor and the motor won. It was indestructible. I had it from 1967 until...

Spark plug wires with Electronic Ignitionn
I'm thinking of replacing my plug wires and found they sell solid core copper wires for points and condenser ignitions and Silicone Insulated with Spiral Wound Suppression Core for electronic ignition. I converted my Model K to Pertronix ignition-does that mean I need to replace my copper core plug ...

Looking for advice on selling my 1947 CC deluxe 17'
I've been in the antique boat hobby for over 50 years. I started with my parents 1960 Cheoy Lee Lion teak sailboat, then the 1947 17' deluxe chris craft bought in 1971, then my 1942 Chris Craft 17' special, assorted wood canoes, kayaks, antique outboards etc. You know the story. Its a great hobby th...

Re: No oil presure model K
Thank you for your replies. I do have an oil cooler. Behind the starter is a 'T' fitting where the tubing goes back to the cooler and another line goes forward to the gauge. It's not the easiest place to work on. I think I need to remove the starter to get a wrench in there, I'll try to remove the '...

No oil presure model K
This is not good, my oil pressure in my 1942 CC special model K went to zero. No sign of oil leakage, oil level ok. Hoping it was just a bad gauge I took the copper oil line off the back of the gauge and started the engine and no oil came out. Blew the line clean with compressed air and same thing. ...

Re: Starter keeps spinning
I had problems like this early this season. The starter would engage and not shut off, I had to disconnect the battery to stop the starter. I bought two new solenoids in one week and after 2 or 3 starts it would come back. Finally bought a NOS solenoid on ebay and haven't had a problem. I think the ...

Thanks Bilge Rat, I've been fine since I replaced the coil, I'm going to buy a spare as you suggested as it seems to create intermittent issues that are hard to diagnose.

Re: Hard to start when hot
That's a great suggestion, I'll put a torque wrench on the flywheel and test it hot and cold. I'm interested in the coil comment. I had a hard time starting earlier this season, it would need starting fluid and the battery on a charger. I put an old coil back on and it started right up. I was gettin...

Hard to start when hot
My 1942 Special with Model K engine starts easy with the new petronix ignition, new large 6V battery, heavy 6V battery cables, and rebuilt starter. But after it runs a while, if I shut it off it wont start and the battery acts like it is dead. Starts fine after it cools down. I've owned the boat for...

Re: Finding TDC with a '48 Chris Craft "k"
Top dead center is when the 4 bolts on the flywheel are horizontal like a rectangle. Do this in combination with your thumb on plug hole #1 to feel full compression because it could be bottom dead center. On my model 1947 K there is a small circle indent on the top of the flywheel but there is none ...
