Re: Repowering 1956 MCL, best alternate?
Thanks, yes I do realize that. Good thing that the wood working part of this is my strong skill, the engine a little less so!

Re: Repowering 1956 MCL, best alternate?
Thanks Jim. I've been looking at 350's but haven't considered a 454. I'll check it out.

Repowering 1956 MCL, best alternate?
What is the best engine for me to repower with for our 1956 23' Continental. I'd like to get about 265 HP.
Thanks!
Thanks!

Re: Loud valves, adjustment needed?
Retarding the timing did the trick. Apparently the arrow on the block and the dimple on the flywheel are just 'suggestions' ! LOL

Will check timing to see if it is too far advanced as a first step.

Loud valves, adjustment needed?
I've noticed a lot of rattling in the engine while under load which sounds like it could be valves tapping. However, there is no tapping at all in neutral at rpms up to 2,500 and more. It is very loud. Could this be valves or something more serious? 1956 Continental 175 HP Hercules engine. Joe 732-9...

Thanks, kind of what of I thought, but, the engine will remain in. Some blocking under the engine as well?

What is the best way to support a 23' Continental to allow access for bottom paint?

Re: Engine bogs down past 2,100 RPMS
Thanks David. Yes, that makes sense. The engine is still not getting past 2,700. Full throttle, 2,700 is the max. I also notice a lot of valve/lifter noise at the higher RPMs.

Re: Engine bogs down past 2,100 RPMS
The initial timing was done using the plug closest to the flywheel as #1 when in my case it is actually the plug closest to the transmission. Also, there was dirt in the carbs, which I have drained. I noticed some water as well.

Re: Engine bogs down past 2,100 RPMS
Thanks everyone. I think we have a handle on it. Combination of timing and dirty fuel. Running much better now, up to 2.900 rpms under load.

Re: Engine bogs down past 2,100 RPMS
Thanks, fuel pump pressure is my bet as well. I'm working on checking that out, not an easy thing to do. As for distributor, its been upgraded to Petronics.

Engine bogs down past 2,100 RPMS
MCL 175 timing is spot on, idles smoothly at 500 RPMs, under load accelerates smoothly and steadily up to 2,100. Past that it seems to bog down and choke through 2,700. It will not go past 2,700. Without load, the engine will rev all the way up smoothly. Carbs have been synchronized with a pressure ...

Prop Size?
Our 1956 23' Continental has what appears to be an old prop that has been reworked numerous times. I am thinking that a 'new' replacement might be in order. The boat is powered with a 175 Hercules. Does anyone know where I can find the specifications for the correct propeller?

Runs great - thanks David!
I was so frustrated that I was seriously thinking of repowering the MCL with something 'younger'. Just couldn't get the engine to run correctly, lots of issues. Kudos to David Van Ness for sticking with me until he got it right. 3 hours of travel time for Dave and he solved the problems 1,2,3. I'm s...

Re: vacuum carburetor synchronizer
I am using the unisync and both choke plates are at the exact same angle but the suction on the forward carb is at least twice the amount of the rear card. Both carbs were cleaned and refitted it over the winter.

Does anyone know why the aft carburator would have much less suction than the forward one at idle?

Casting number 3577. Dog leg-yes Square is 3/4" by 3/4". Not sure what you mean by hole spacing but it seems like your's would work. How much?
