Replace with a bronze elbow is best option. Jim Staib might help. www.finewoodboats.com

Metal stitching may be possible is it's cracked. But must be solid, enough material thickness and no previous repairs (Ie. welded) Frank Casey in Millbury MA has 40+ years experience stitching. 508 865 6613.

Re: Screws for rub rail on 1960 Capri

I used No. 6 x 1 1/4" (3.5 x 30 mm) SS oval head screws for my 7/8" (22 mm) SS rub rails. The holes was countersunk for No. 6 screws. www.ccfastners.com here in the US has the screws.

I use epoxy thickened with West 405 (wood flour) in the seams. The color of the mix is brown like and it sands flat. 5200 (or you adhesive of choice) between batten and backside plank.

MBL length?

Does anyone have information on the over all length of a CC MBL with 1:1 trans? Missing the engine on a project and thinking of re-powering.

Thanks!

1957-58 18' Holiday.

I am working on a 1957-58, 18' Holiday that is throwing me a couple of unknowns. First, the hull number is a little odd. With the Mariners Museum's research dept. still closed, I'm not able to get info from them. The back seat frame is stamped with 18-HY-262. Hull markings on other Holidays seems to...

Re: Barrelback dashboard stain

Don, you are right. Consensus may been a poor word choice. It is however the opinion of the people who are to judge my work later, that walnut was used. Again, right or wrong, I can't call. These are a couple of pictures of the back side of my old dash. You can see the red on top and a darker walnut...

Re: Barrelback dashboard stain

Thanks everyone for inputs, and the PM's. Seems like the consensus among those the pro's and researchers is walnut stain. Right or wrong, that's what I'll go with.

Barrelback dashboard stain

Working on staining interior parts on my Barrelback project, and wonder what the consensus is on whenever the dash is Walnut or CC red stain.

1940 17' Deluxe seats

With the last transom plank now installed on my 1940 17" Deluxe, it's time for the interior parts. It was a gray boat and I have no remains of the seats and the seat backs. I want to recreate as original, and i am asking if anyone have some detailed pictures of these parts. Any and all information i...

Re: Plywood Bottom

Richard, I personally think 5 layers is redundant and more work. Using 3 x 6 mm as described by Dan Nelson will be plenty strong, but I second Brian that 3 layers of 4 mm should be sufficient on a 17' boat. If your not a purist, I think a properly done cold molded bottom is just as good as a planked...

Here is a little report on my first attempt on a cold molded bottom. Using 3 layers of 3 mm BS1088 plywood on a 18' Riva. This boat originally had a 8 mm single piece molded plywood bottom.

Re: Plywood Bottom

Just playing devil's advocate here, as I would put a planked bottom on myself. Using 5 layers of proper 1/8" BS-1088 Marine plywood should not be any different than 3 layers of 1/4", for a 'West-System" (aka cold molded) bottom? Other than more work maybe? 1/8" would be much easier to shape to the c...

Re: 6 Volt Bilge Blower

Since 6V blowers are harder to get than a kidney transplant, I am trying to find a repair shop for small electric motors to restore mine. I have a 6V Italian made bilge blower for a Riva Florida that took a dive, and the motor is seized up. Can anyone offer a recommendation?

Drawing terminology

On the drawing I have for my 17' Deluxe, the wording "saddle" is used, 41" from the outside transom corner forward, and 6' 7 1/2" apart. Is this the same as the placement for the original shipping cradle?

Thanks.

You could also go with a 121hp KB engine. That was an option for the 17' BB in 1940-42. You will not remove any value or get dinged at a boat show either. Dave Van Ness (Van Ness Engineering) or Peter Henkel (Chris-Craft-Parts)can build you one. Bjorn. http://s10.postimage.org/ld1jv7c9x/KB_flyer.jpg...

I've found that using aluminum "bubble wrap" insulation works very well. Not much dead air to heat up. I used the 12" wide, folded over and staple together. And I did the steaming in two passes on the chines for my 17' Deluxe. I placed the chine on the boat, clamped to the two center frame knees, an...

Prewar bilge color

I have gathered three, considered known, paints of Chris Craft bilge color. No. 1 is a mix from a classic boat parts/accessory supplier. No. 2 is Sherwin Williams #2301 Farmhouse considered a match to prewar red. No. 3 is a mix that's considered to be correct postwar. My hull is 70+ years old and th...
