Hagerty discontinues classic boat insurance

I recently got a letter from Hagerty advising they are not going to renew the insurance on my 1938 Deluxe Runabout because Hagerty has decided to "discontinue the Classic Boat Program." Hagerty is switching to the Markel American Insurance Company as their new underwriter, and I should await a lette...

Re: Waterproofing for canvas cover?

Thank you all for your recommendations. I'll check the web for information on each of these products to see what would be best for cotton canvas.

Waterproofing for canvas cover?

The custom made canvas cover for my runabout is no longer waterproof, but is otherwise clean and serviceable. Can anyone with experience recommend a brand of waterproofer that will restore the cover without risk of damage to a freshly varnished boat? I'm afraid that waterproofing liquids that use pe...

Experienced upholsterer needed in Wisconsin

While laying up my 37 DeLuxe Runabout, I just discovered a spring has poked through the red vinyl (originally red russaloid) of one seat bottom and has torn the vinyl covering the adjoining seat back. I want to have both seat bottoms and seat backs repaired and recovered, and am in need of somebody ...

The answer to your question is right there in the third and in the last photo: BONFIRE. Just strip out the few bits and bobs that might be of use to someone else first. Would you spend the same money to restore a Yugo or a Geo Metro automobile? Even it it cost exactly the same to restore a Mustang, ...

I have read somewhere that the aluminum heads readily warped due to the different heat expansion rates between the iron block and the aluminum head. Did CC issue a recall or offer free iron heads if the aluminum one blew? Was the "thin" head on my engine something unique to replace warped aluminum h...

I know. Boy, do I know. At least once a summer I've got to empty the sediment bowl under my fuel pump and rinse out the brass fuel filter in the carb. This is needed even though I use only pure gasoline. I had to do it more often when I ran gas with ethanol. I keep a small glass screw top jar and a ...

Which spark plugs should I use with a "thin" head?

My 1938 DeLuxe Runabout has its original KA 95hp engine, but the aluminum head was at some point in the past replaced with something called a "thin" head made of iron. My 1938 engine instruction book specifies Champion H-10 spark plugs for both the KA and KB aluminum head engines, which have 7.5 : 1...

Is the gas eight years old? The first thing I'd look at are the fuel filters. Your symptoms perfectly fit those of a cruddy and partially blocked fuel system.

ACBS 100 Point Judging Format

Does anybody know where I can get a look at and print a copy of the 100 point judging format? I know it is buried in the ACBS web site in the Members' Area, in the President's Manual, but when I log in and try to see them nothing happens. Apparently I need Excel to do so, but I run an Apple. I'm get...

2011 Geneva Lake Boat Show

Can anyone shoot me the dates for the 2011 (that's next year) Geneva Lake Boat Show. I think it is also an international show or convention, too. I've got friends from the east coast who want to come, but I don't have my calendar at hand.
Thanks, Craig

Missing Gasket?

Post Script Today I purchased "graphite valve packing" (AKA graphite rope) at my local True Value hardware store. I thought I was looking for an auto parts related item, but what I needed is actually found in plumbing supply. The graphite rope came in a bubble packet and measured 3/32" diameter by t...

I recently had to repair a leak in the copper pipe that delivers the cooling water into the exhaust system on my 1938 KA engine. Just a few post scripts from my own experiences: 1. If the prop shaft and key won't fully seat themselves into the collar, check to see if you have a third set screw blocking the way. On some collars there is a little hole for a third set screw that locks the key tightly into place. The set screw is...

Zenith Carbs Article

I recall reading what I think was a two part article on Zenith Carbs in either Classic Boating or in ACBS's Rudder magazine about a year ago. Since I'm at the lake cottage, I don't have access to my library at home.

Can anyone tell me where the article was published and the issue?
