Re: Water Pump question

Water should bypass the thermostat and come out of the exhaust fairly quickly.

Re: 1959 CC Ski 18'

I wish someone in the know would verify the thing that I heard years ago about single gauge flathead fords.... i.e. that the single gauge read temp on one manifold and if the other overheated it would simply spike the gauge all the way over to hot??? May not be the case but would make sense given t...

Re: Where to find cylinder head for 283

I think (not something I am good at these days, so VERIFY) the 283 heads were 64 cc chambers. You should be able to find all sorts of new SBC heads on Summit Racing, Jeggs and other auto sites. Plus a million used and rebuilt heads. Try searching for “small block chevey heads” and the search for one...

Re: 1959 CC Ski 18'

The original setup had two senders and two gauges, and no thermostat. The water temp in the 155 range is fine. The exhaust at the elbow should be hot, but cool enough to briefly touch without burning yourself. If the rubber hose is smoking, or the paint is burning off the elbow, it is not getting en...

Re: Need a new engine

I would get a marine 350 long block. You need to drill the oil hole and drill and tap the water outlet on the heads, but other than that everything should bolt on and look like a 283 with 260+ hp.

That will be the cheapest way to go and still look original.

For anyone from New England, this would be a great stop on your trip to Port Huron for the big ACBS International show whose pre-events kick off the next day. From Grand Island to Lort Huron is only a few hours across the South Ontario wilderness.

Re: Replacement Fuel Tank

Ethanol makes fuel electrically conductive so you have to be careful with dissimilar metals to avoid galvonic corrosion issues.

What metal do you plan to use for the main tank?

A more prominent "New Posts" button and "change password" link would be nice. Also, the post reply link is small and has poor contrast making it hard to see on a small phone screen.

Sunscreen and bug spray can ruin varnish too. Other than that and the advice above, clean soft towels for wipe downs.

Re: Fuel Pump

Electric with an oil pressure cutoff switch (separate piece) is safer, handles ethanol better, primes and starts faster which reduces starter wear etc.

Max pressure should be 5-6 psi.

The one I use is a Carter p4389 and I pair it with a Holley oil pressure cutoff.

Re: New engine update

My latest thoughts on this are that the lack of load has saved you from killing the engine with too much advance, and that something else is wrong and the extra advance is compensating for it. I would start by dialing the advance back by about 8 degrees. 32 at 3000, 16 or so at idle should be good. ...

Re: New engine update

How are you measuring the timing? I would expect it to be hard to start with that much base advance, so I am wondering if it is a measurement error. If the mechanical advance rolls in and you get past the mid to upper 30's I think you are going to have detonation issues, and 30 base plus mechanical ...

How about spark plug wiring? Pull the #1 plug and verify that it is at TDC at 0* and then tripe check your firing order. Also, which cylinder is #1, the GM version or CC numbering?

It starts and idles at 30* advance, or runs at 2000+ rpm after starting at a lower advance? I am thinking it maybe a measurement error of some sort.

Re: Oil for the new engine

If the new engine has a flat tappet cam you need high ZDDP oil or a zinc/ZDDP additive, especially for breaking in, but also over the life of the engine. The ZDDP levels were dramatically reduced in modern oils to protect catalytic converters, but our old engines still need it. Also, verify oil requ...

Re: Dual exhaust for 283 in a 55' Sportsman

With straight exhaust and no muffler or restriction, I don't think there is any real difference in noise level. Going from low power low compression K's to V8's with more cylinders, higher compression, and more power is likely why he found it louder.
