Re: Self bailer

Someone said that they didn't have the siphon break hole on pre war boats.

Re: Self bailer

That's what I thought but I ran across someone who insists that there is no hole. Maybe they initially didn't have holes and later changed when a few boats sank. I don't know how old the boat is.

Self bailer

Isn't there supposed to be a small hole at the top of the casting to prevent siphoning when the boat is stopped? If so how large should it be?

If you go with gear reduction and a larger prop you may need a larger shaft, stuffing box, and a strut that is longer "Higher". I think if you are going to all that trouble you should go diesel.

Gallons per hour are only part of the story. How far did you go, current and wind conditions are also a factor. Many times you burn more fuel on plane, but you also go a lot further. There is always a sweet spot. You get on plane, then adjust the trim tabs and the throttles so that you get just enou...

The same test can be done with the distributor. With the points closed there should be absolutely no resistance across them.

Just remember it doesn't take much oxidation at all at 6 volts and it will act just like a dead battery. Check from the center terminal + of the battery to the starter solenoid using the lowest scale of resistance. There should be absolutely no resistance. It should be a dead short. If any resistanc...

To add to what Jim said. When you have the spark plugs removed try to manually turn the engine over. If you can turn it over manually, but the battery/starter system can't then you know for sure its just electrical. If you can't then something is wrong mechanically. I personally would get another ba...

I used Valve Tec and it fouled my spark plugs big time. Since then I've come to realize you don't need any additives. Just use a good fuel filter.

Be sure to use a bronze pin, anything else will rust away, way worse in salt water. Should be same metal as the prop. Maybe good stainless would be OK.

I think a shoot out would be great fun, but I think it should include more than shear speed.

similar horsepower, & compare efficiency, top speed, turning radius, MPG, things like that.

I've never read Danenbergs book and I've never watched a 5200 bottom being installed, but since the boards fit into a rabbit in the keel/keelsen, what would prevent that seam from leaking. The plywood also goes up to the keelsen not over it. Do they just glop 5200 all along the keelsen when they put...

The thing here to be wary of is, to make sure the paint you use is compatible with what is already on the boat. I've seen what happens when they are not compatible, as in major peeling.

Those gouges are nothing. Just mix west systems with a thickener. Let it dry & sand it smooth. Be sure to paint the area with unthickened epoxy first then after it has dried, but before it totally cures apply the thickened stuff. Works great & its inexpensive.

If I click on the picture it enlarges. If I click again it really gets large. Kinda like each time I click it doubles the size. A third click does nothing.

I'm using firefox.

It actually goes through the bow and also through a backing block and a nut is screwed on on the inside. Its handy and it seems plent...

I had wedges on a 36 ft Commander (1954) It had electric Tabs, but they never worked. That was Ok because the boat didn't need them. The wedges were all she needed.

I have a 30 ft Connie with 327's, and it won't plane out without the tabs. Just sits there bow up with the engines roaring. Soon as soon as the tabs force the bow down, it goes great.

diesels are different than gas. Diesels don't need power or electricity They stay running because they have heat and fuel and they will run until something external stops them. The way you stop a diesel is to shut off the air. Therefore if you couldn't stop it and now you can't start it, look for a ...
