Re: Temp Gauge Not Working
I finally got a chance to test the bulb end attached to the cylinder head with a hair dryer and still no results on the gauge. I also tried warming the wire close to the gauge to see if that had any effect but that also didn't move the needle so I guess it's the gauge. At this point in the season I ...

Temp Gauge Not Working
The temp gauge on my Chris Craft M has decided to quit working this season. It has the sensor on the head connected to the gauge with a metal [copper?] connection. Any suggestions of things to look for in finding the problem?

Adjusting Type M Clutch
Last fall when I changed the oil in the engine and the trans I used Brad Penn straight 30W oil. This spring I noticed some slippage in the trans at higher rpm's so I took the trans cover off to adjust the clutch. Unfortunately, I can't get a good wrench fit on the adjusting and lock nuts and don't w...

Re: Where to start?
I would say there is way too much uncertainty with these engines to not have them rebuilt. The last thing you want is to spend that much time and effort on the hull and have bad engines.

OK - Thanks Mike! I will keep searching eBay to see if I can come up with one. It will give me something to do over the long Covid winter.

Re: Missing Horn
Thanks Matt - That looks nothing like the horn off the old Plymouth so I will scrap that idea. Now I just need to find to find an original. Jim - Do you have one?

Missing Horn
When I purchased my 1941 - 19' Custom, it was missing the horn that was mounted under the deck. Does anyone have a picture of what the original horn looked like? The reason I ask is that my father once renovated a 1941 Plymouth and I found the horn in the attached pictures among his things. It was c...

Re: New battery - ammeter pegged at 0
I would up taking the generator to a place in Michigan called Madison Generator Repair which is about as old as the boat. They tested the unit and found out the regulator was bad [he said it was aftermarket and called it a bad name]. He had a NOS Delco regulator on the shelf to put on and it now run...

Re: New battery - ammeter pegged at 0
Well - we went out, got her on plane and took off one of the battery cables and the engine instantly died. I guess the generator is due for a rebuild.

Re: New battery - ammeter pegged at 0
The ammeter does not move when turning on and off the lights with the engine not running. It has always worked well before changing the battery and there is nothing special about this new battery. I have attached a picture of the regulator - three wires coming out from the bottom.

New battery - ammeter pegged at 0
I recently replaced my battery with a std. Series 24 starting marine battery (My M engine was converted to 12v years ago). When I first started the engine the ammeter pegged to 20+ but once I tapped on it it went to zero. Now when I run the boat it does not move no matter how fast or if the lights a...

Re: Blow By
Thanks Mike - great suggestions. I am especially curious about the down spouts near the bow light as the fumes do seem to be coming from stern to bow from under the floor boards.

I have noticed an increase in exhaust fumes in the front cockpit of my 1941 19’ Custom with M engine. I have tightened down the manifold bolts to 30#’s as per the specs. and tightened down the connection to the exhaust pipe. The smell is minimal at idle and increases with speed. Any ideas?

On our first cruise of the year yesterday I noticed an exhaust smell in the front cockpit of our 1941 Custom. I will tighten down the exhaust manifold bolts but for the elbow/exhaust pipe connection is there a better way to tightening the large nut other then the hammer/chisel method?

Also I noticed that while the new coil was quite warm to the touch it was far cooler than the old coil. That leads me to believe the old coil was “fried”.

I just got back from our sea trial and everything ran great so thanks to everyone for their input. I do agree that carrying a backup set of ignition parts and coil will be part of my protocol now.

Re: Bad coil?
I just put a new Napa IC14 coil on and it fired right up but the real test will come with the test drive. I will need to wait until I get a buddy with a chase boat to follow me.

Re: Bad coil?
No. After the first time the engine died I replaced the cap, rotor, points and condenser that I got from Jim Staib and it ran great at the dock. It only died when idling after running at half throttle for about 20 minutes.

Re: Bad coil?
After it sat for a couple of hours it fired right back up. Since I have had this boat (three years) it has run flawlessly and nothing was changed over the winter which makes it confusing. I will pull the coil today to see what it is.

Re: Bad coil?
I probably just answered my own question. I just went to check the engine and while the engine temp. Is now less than 100f the coil is scorching hot. The engine has been converted to 12v so what replacement coil should I be looking for?

Bad coil?
Having just been towed back home for the second time this year was not how I wanted to start my vacation. My 1941 Custom with M engine starts and runs great when cruising but then dies when the engine is warm and idling. It will cough a couple of times before dying but once it dies it will not start...

Re: Air in fuel bowl
Thanks Jim. To be honest I have never heard of a jet in the suction line of the tank. A crazy side note to this story is that the engine died 10' from the breakwall in front of the Coast Guard Station In Charlevoix. I was trying to get someone's attention so I could toss a line and tie up to investi...

Air in fuel bowl
Last weekend on a cruise the M engine died when I pulled back to idle. I flooded the engine trying to get it restarted and had to be towed back. On inspection I had about 1/4” of air in the top of the bowl so I assumed the old gasket was leaking. I got a new gasket from Fine Wood Boats (thanks Jim!)...

Re: M Engine Fuel Bowl Gasket
I just received the new gasket and it is much thicker and better made then the existing so hopefully this does the trick. I do not have an aftermarket fuel filter but the tank and all the lines are new as of 2016. If I take the back seat out it's not too bad getting access to the bowl - the big tric...

Re: M Engine Fuel Bowl Gasket
I have a new gasket coming from Finewoodboats which I will install this weekend which hopefully solves the issue. In the past on other boats I have put a thin film of waterproof grease on both side of the gasket to hold it in place during installation. Any issues with this?

Re: M Engine Fuel Bowl Gasket
The boat started and ran well at the beginning of the season and the first couple of times that we ran it but they were only short distances. Yesterday was the first time we ran it for a longer distance so maybe it allowed more air to get in. When I manually would prime the pump I would see air bubb...
