Re: Prop Shaft

Sounds like you found your problem but I have also seen this occur when the motor mounts are shot - esp. on the problematic mounts that CC used with the Hercs. The thrust of the prop when in use will push the motor forward.

Don, the wheel I am running is made by Cutter. I found it an ebay in unused condition for a 150 bucks - it was a no brainer deal to give it a shot and I have been really pleased with the results. If I were to choose from new wheel I would look real hard at a OJ Legend 4 blade in SS. I would suggest ...

Don, you might want to do some research on the SS props that are available. The main advantage is due to the inherent strength of the material they can design props with thinner blades, especially in the root area next to the hub. This results in being able to run more blade area (either diameter, p...

Once you have a modern 4 blade dialed in you will not want to go back to a three blade again.
Could not agree more with Don. On my own boat I run a modern stainless steel 4 blade - it is a sweet wheel.

It was my understanding that the early boats with 3/8" planking had putty, later boats with 1/2" planking had bungs.

Agreed. I have not seen that photo before. Check out those proud bungs on the aft port deck, mismatched bungs on both the hull and deck and the scruffy varnish. Its factory original!

You would be surprised by the curves that a skill saw can cut. I really like to use a worm drive in this application rather than the more typical side-winder.

The best tool to use is a worm drive skill saw. Much easier to bring the tool to such a large chunk of lumber rather than drag such of heavy piece through a tool such as a band saw. If you do use a band saw you will need a couple of helpers to guide the wood through the saw.

Brian, in those factory photos is there any indication that the ceiling boards are all bleached or are there any photos of boats that have the upper ceiling boards left natural (no stain) and the remaining bleached?

Jim;
I don’t think I have ever seen so many fender cleats on a Cadet. What would be the purpose of having fender cleats on the transom? Was it because they held down the factory shipping canvas? My bet is a “judge” would ding you today if you placed fender cleats on the transom today.

Question to the experts: It was my understanding that the tri carb Hercs (KBL) had a more aggressive cam (higher lift) than did the K or KL’s. Is that correct? I have never seen cam profile numbers for the CC line of Hercs. The reason I ask is long ago I was putting together a KL and naturally I was...

Afraid I’m not going to be much help. The boats that I have worked on were gray boats that came to me less the interiors. Yep, house bill SB 5436 passed with a large majority in the senate so it is off to the house for final approval. Because of the makeup of Washington State elected officials, the bill (in my opinion) will most likely go into effect thus making Washington State the first state in the nation to ban cop...

Chris, Bret’s advice is right on. The biggest bang for the buck would be to buy long blocks and use your existing accessories. If it was my boat I would go one step further and use 383 long blocks instead of 350’s – one can never have enough power, especially in a cruiser.

Wow, I don’t think I have ever seen a wooden runabout with the inside of the bilge fiberglassed. What a pain it must have been to glass the inside of the bilge – tucking in the matt against those frames and all. Wonder what they were thinking. I assume that the bottom (outside) was glassed also?
