Re: Recommended KBL Engine Oil
I guess I'm still out to sea regarding engine oils. Brad Penn 30 wt high performance oil and Rotella straight 30 wt oil both seem to indicate that they are detergent oils. Is this true? I prefer to use a single grade non-detergent oil in my M-27 engine as I can only assume it's been a long time sinc...

Re: Recommended KBL Engine Oil
Thanks for clearing that up for me. My Chrysler M-27 engine came with the Garwood Ensign I''m restoring. I have to assume it's been a long time since anyone has seen the engine interior. Based on this info I'll plan on using 30 wt Brad Penn without any additional ZDDP additive. John C

Re: Recommended KBL Engine Oil
One of the posts regarding the use of Brad Penn 30 wt engine oil in classic flat head engines was to make sure you don't use Brad Penn 30 wt break-in oil. The only thing I see different in the oils is the addition of proper levels of ZDDP in the break=in oil. Is there harm in using the break-in oil ...

Does anyone know if gaskets are available for this engine? I'm looking for the generator mounting gasket. It's very thin and fragile so I'd prefer not having to make it. John

Re: Finishing deck
I plan on using the roll and tip method so your suggestion of rolling with the grain makes good sense. I think using a folded 80 grit to clean out the grooves answers my main question. I have experimented with several stains and colors and have decided to go with Interstain red mahogany. I did a 194...

Finishing deck
I am ready to stain. seal and varnish the deck on my '46 Garwood Ensign. How does one maintain the integrity of the deck grooves? I plan on staining with Interstain followed by 2 coats of CPES and then Captains varnish. I have 1/8" deck grooves. It seems like all these applications would tend to fil...

Re: Deck toe rail on 16' Garwood
Thanks to all. Great help. I wasn't sure what common practice was. I should have a good fit---am presently working on joint where the toe rails meet. Whichever way I choose I'll make sure the underside is sealed. Thanks again.

Deck toe rail on 16' Garwood
I'm restoring a 1946 16' Garwood Ensign and have pretty much got the deck ready for seal, stain and varnish. One more sanding required. I've got a question regarding installing the foredeck toe rail. I used the WEST System on the deck boards. I'm thinking I may want to remove the toe rail down the r...

One cricket now. 3 bolts are correct. I'll take your word that it'll come out easy and slip back in just as easy. I guess I can always rotate the engine by hand to re-align gears if needed. Thanks for your responses.

Engine Generator
I have a Chrysler M-27 Crown engine which has a gear driven generator. Are there any things or steps I should be concerned about in removing it from the engine. It needs to be rebuilt plus I want to convert to a 12 v system. One of my concerns is how to line up the gear teeth on re-installation.

The M27 Chrysler Crown engine that came with the Gar Wood Ensign I am restoring is missing the voltage regulator. I assume it was a 6 volt regulator. I plan on changing to a 12 volt system. Can anyone help me as to where I can purchase a 12 volt that would be compatible with this engine? Any other a...

You cleared up my confusion by telling me that part C was originally spot welded to part A. Now it makes sense. I have the small machine screw that adjusts part B arm tension. Good explanation. Thank you much.

Steering Wheel Column Reassembly
I'm having difficulty reassembling throttle rod and parts below gearbox. Maybe a part or two are missing. Picture attached. I have identified the three parts I have as A, B and C. I believe part B is supposed to be used to vary the friction on throttle rod so it won't rotate as the wheel is turned. ...

fuel filter
I'm having trouble finding a convenient spot for a fuel filter on the Garwood Ensign I'm restoring. It's a 16' utility. What are the thoughts of leaving a filter out? I will be installing a new aluminum gas tank so I shouldn't see contaminates from the tank. The engine is a Chrysler M27 Crown. For t...

Chrysler M27 Crown
1. Does anyone know where I can obtain a maintenance manual for a Chrysler M27 Crown?
2. I'm also looking for necessary information to convert this engine from a 6v to a 12v system. I hope to use elecric temp and oil sending units.

I wound up going with a new aluminum tank from Carr Enterprises, St. Petersburg, FL. Great quality to coast guard regulations and the price was very reasonable.

Re: Gas tank restorayion
I'm going to check with the local radiator shop but based on 2 responses who tried that (and still replaced the tank) i'm dubious. I replaced the tank on a 1941 16' Chris Craft restoration a few years ago but that tank had about 1 1/2" of heavy sludge on the bottom. This one has loose rust. The obvi...

Gas tank restorayion
The gas tank from the Garwood Ensign I'm restoring seems very sound ,however, it has quite a bit of fine powdery dry rust inside that readily flows out the fill tube when shaken upside down. Is there a procedure that will allow use of the tank without releasing contaminants into the fuel system? I'm...

Thanks to both of you for the info. Just what I needed. Are the attached drawings in the "Crown and Ace Maintenance Manual" ? Can either of you identify the model/manufacturer of my gearbox shown in attached pics? Best I could do as unit is back in a corner.
