Re: Forgot key, hot wired it, think I fried something

Just so y'all know... twas the condenser! Cost me 8 bucks to fix.

Thank you all very much for the help. Even though it wasn't an expensive lesson, I have learned one all the same.

Re: Forgot key, hot wired it, think I fried something

Thanks for the reply, I was beginning to think this was way more complicated than I thought originally, based on the lack of responses. There is no electronic anything on this engine... it's all the original 1948 setup. So if I replace the coil and the points, I should be good to go? If so, what abo...

Forgot key, hot wired it, think I fried something

Sigh. First off, my wires to engine had been labeled by someone once upon a time, so I reference those labels below. Boat is a 1948, Hercules M. Converted to 12 V. I ran a wire from positive of batt to one side of coil where wire from ignition is (label said Coil) and also one side of the block moun...

fresh water cooling, zinc?

I looked way up under the little coolant tank that was added to my boat years ago when it was converted to fresh water cooling, and I saw another small tank under it, in the engine compartment, that has one hose from the upper tank and two big hoses going down around the engine. There was a "Zinc" s...

Re: Full Sunbrella or covered slip?

Doug... good point. My boat is pretty much a user, the varnish is past it's optimal time to be done. It will never be a show boat, only because I don't want it to be / can't afford to make it that (same thing  ). And, up here in the Pacific NW, mildew / mold is a bigger deal than elsewhere I gu...

Re: Full Sunbrella or covered slip?

Well, crap. That's 3 and a half Yay, 1 and a half Nay. I told myself that if I got 10 responses and two of them were negative, I'd go with the Yays. Not quite there yet, but not looking favorable for moving and saving the $200 per month :| Don't know quite else how to make this decision, since I'm s...

Re: Full Sunbrella or covered slip?

Jim,

I thought the Sunbrella would keep the rain and sun off of everything except the painted hull. Are you saying the topsides would still get wet and the UV would still harm the varnish?

Re: Full Sunbrella or covered slip?

Thanks, all. Doug... The only issue I have with that is my preferred stomping grounds are south sound, near Gig Harbor. Where I'm thinking of moving is Lakebay Marina, new owners and they're really sprucing it up. The cost would be half of what I'm paying for covered in GH... 220 per month as oppose...

Full Sunbrella or covered slip?

My current marina is getting way too proud of thier covered slips... I'm thinking about moving to a different marina, open slip. I do have a full custom two piece Sunbrella cover that the previous owner had made for the boat. I've never actually used it. Boat is a 1948 27' Super Deluxe Enclosed. I k...

Re: 1948 cruiser, throttle way too sticky

Well, a year later and I'm finally getting down to dealing with this :-p The problem is for sure inside the steering column... All else disconnected and the wheel thumb lever won't move. Everything after that is as free as a bird. I got some vise grips on the bottom of the rod connected to the lever...

Wow. Great input by all. All the replies have definitely shown me what I need to do... Decide now whether to sell or not. All the rest doesn't matter. There's no way I'm bringing her home unless I'm keeping her. Having had that moment of clarity, I still don't know what the h*ll I'm going to do. But...

Re: To sell or not to sell

"you have to consider whether the boat will suffer more out of the water than in the water" Do you mean plank shrinkage? Is there any other downside to having it out? I'm assuming that even if I have it out for 2 years, it would just be a matter of a nerve-wracking first week back in the water, righ...

Great advice Peter, thank you. What are your thoughts on selling in drydock vs. in the water, just in case I do decide to sell?

Re: To sell or not to sell

Right, I know the money is just vapor, that's why I'm thinking I either get it home, then repair it and sell it (or don't repair it, and then sell it). That plan would not include hauling it back to the water. OR I sell it now, in the water (if selling in the water is better than from drydock). I on...

To sell or not to sell

I'm sure that question's been asked a billion times... I have lined up a pro hauler to bring my 1948 27' Super Deluxe Enclosed up to my house from the marina where she's currently in the water. She needs deferred maintenance as well as a couple repairs that I don't want to tackle in the water. The s...

Re: Anyone know of a pro transporter in Pacific NW?

I am about ready to go with Associated in Marysville, price still seems steep. Total for transport, keel blocks and 4 new stands is $1,644 including tax. Total drive miles for them including back home will be about 160. Again, price seems way too high, but I need this done right and don't know who e...

How many people don't keep their boats in salt water?

I'm about to pull her from her covered salt water slip and do repairs for about a year, but I'm wondering... is it common to pull these at the end of every season and then relaunch every year? It's 27' with a 94" beam, so it is trailerable. Maybe my money would be best spent getting a proper trailer...

To sling or not to sling

I am having my 1948 27' Super deluxe Enclosed Cruiser hauled about 80 miles by a pro transporter. She is in a slip at a yard with a two sling setup. I am leaning towards having them sling her out as opposed to loading her from the water onto the trailer. The cost would be about the same either way, ...

Re: Anyone know of a pro transporter in Pacific NW?

Doug,

I just got a quote from Associated for $970.00. Seems a bit steep, what do you think? They have to go south 80 miles to pick up the boat, and then 70 miles north back up towards Marysville to drop in Carnation. So, their total drive miles should end up being 160, 170 max.

Anyone know of a pro transporter in Pacific NW?

I need to have my 27' 1948 Enclosed hauled about 70 miles. 8' beam. Any good transporters for old wooden boats in the Seattle / Portland area? She needs to be hauled from Gig Harbor Wa. to Carnation, WA.
