Re: Best way to secure transome to trailer?
I was going to bring this subject up to Matt on WOODYBOATER but since it is being discussed on this forum I have a comment. I originally held the boat down with a strap over the shaft but never felt comfortable with this method because of potential damage to the strut, shaft, and or alignment. I lik...

Re: Jabsco water pump
Chad/Jim, thanks for your help. Jim, when you say that the wrong adjustment will "chew up the end of the adjuster and the fiber thrust washer." is that something that is obvious? I ask because I ran the engine for an hour at low revolutions and have not noticed any issues with the pump or distribute...

Re: Jabsco water pump
This problem solved....for now. I pulled the water pump and saw that the tongue (?) on the shaft was partly worn where the collar rubbed. I loosened the nut on the back the engine and was able to move the tongue forward to engage the collar. Whoever worked on the pump last reinstalled it with a thic...

Jabsco water pump
Long story short, after an engine rebuild the motor started and water came out the tailpipe for a minute or so then stopped. The pump shaft is not rotating with the engine. It is a 1947 K. Is it possible that the shaft was replaced incorrectly? I am looking for a schematic to understand how it works...

Re: drive shaft pulled out transmission seal-lost all oil
Last month I was able to convince Steve Bunda in Crandon, Wisconsin to see if he could help me out (he is the guy with the workshop floor that you could eat off of). He just got done repainting his shop floor and was waiting on his next project so he agreed to see what he could do. Long story short,...

Re: drive shaft pulled out transmission seal-lost all oil
Thanks for checking Tom. Your measurements convince me that the shaft hole was drilled in the wrong location. what a nightmare this boat has turned into. I am amazed that a person who claims to be a "professional boat restorer" made such a mess of this boat.
Anyway, thanks again for your help Tom.

Re: drive shaft pulled out transmission seal-lost all oil
Is it safe to assume that all 17' CC Runabouts constructed in 46-47 have the shaft hole in the same location through the keel? As reported previously, I believe that the hole was constructed 3 inches forward of the correct location. This assumption is based upon the strut, and also that the prop sha...

Re: drive shaft pulled out transmission seal-lost all oil
Half a year later the reverse gear housing was installed properly and the motor put back in the boat. The next problem was aligning the shaft to the motor. After much swearing, cursing, and head scratching I removed the strut, bolted the couplings together, and positioned the motor as far forward as...

Re: drive shaft pulled out transmission seal-lost all oil
My mechanic noticed that the grease on the splines indicated only 1/3 of the length was smeared after putting the transmission on the motor. Nothing else appears to be wrong so it is probably much about nothing. Thanks for your help.

Re: drive shaft pulled out transmission seal-lost all oil
It has been a long winter but I did remove the engine and had it rebuilt along with the transmission. We found that the transmission shaft actually sheared off. Apparently there was enough friction on the two pieces to enable the shaft to spin until it finally separated. Now that is it time to attac...

Re: Bubbles bubbles bubbles
The photo of the melted varnish needs further explanation. In an other post I asked for help with bubbles and received various answers. My investigation led me to giving up on the "perfect" varnish finish by brush or roller. Instead, I went to the auto store and purchased Megular's products for buff...

Re: Mechanic Recommendation
I finally found a mechanic to work on BOOMER's transmission and motor. He started to take the transmission apart and found that the output shaft is broken about 3 inches in from the coupling. I have a feeling that the shaft was broken before I bought the boat and it would spin the shaft until the re...

Mechanic Recommendation
I am located in Northeast Wisconsin and in need of a reputable mechanic to work on my 1947 K engine. I have local feelers out but no luck so far. Can anyone recommend a good mechanic, preferably in Wisconsin?

Re: drive shaft pulled out transmission seal-lost all oil
Looking at the motor again, I do not see how I could rotate the aft up because of the way the engine sits within the rear seat bulk head. Even if I removed the cooling water return pipe at the cylinder head I don't think the engine will clear. Jim G. are you talking about lifting the aft end in a ut...

Re: drive shaft pulled out transmission seal-lost all oil
Is there enough room to back out the transmission if I can get the prop half of the coupling off and back out the shaft? About now I am thinking that I should consider this season shot and pull the engine for a clean-up, repainting, and reinstallation for next year. Bummer. Thanks for all your advice.

Re: drive shaft pulled out transmission seal-lost all oil

I have been following the recent discussion about doing this and will try tomorrow. But can anyone explain how the tr...

Re: Gas Tank Question
Dave, BOOMER had a 2005 gas tank (leaker) that I replaced last year with a new one. The fill tube was centered on the 2005 tank. I had a new one built to the same dimensions (13" diameter by 36" long) and it fits with plenty of room for the exhaust pipe. My other runabout has an original tank with t...

Re: drive shaft pulled out transmission seal-lost all oil
Thanks for the information guys. Based upon the responses and a little research I am tempted to remove the transmission myself and see what I can accomplish. Re: drive shaft pulled out transmission seal-lost all oil
I got most of the oil out of the bilge and separated the coupling halves. The nut is on the tailshaft so that was not the problem. Therefore I assume that the tailshaft has disconnected from the engine. I am not sure if that is indicative of a more serious transmission problem. Can anyone explain ho...

Re: drive shaft pulled out transmission seal-lost all oil
This is from an original post from 2005 but it reads like my most recent problem. I have a 1947 K with a paragon transmission. We were idling on the Yahara River through Madison Wi. this weekend and suddenly the power to the prop stopped and we were adrift. After a tow to a dock I tried to adjust fo...

Re: Engine Compartment Ventilation Cowls
Mike, neither of my two 1947 Deluxe Runabouts have painted cowls. As far as I know the cowls are original. I have seen others with the red insides and have considered painting mine, so I am interested in other's comments.

I noticed a Laciede comment in this thread from february and have to ask what don't I understand about this forum? My screen often shows that Laciede's comment is a single letter or symbol. His thread of his boat repair is primarily the same way. Is this a code or another level of access I don't have?

Adjusting Belt tension
I just received my rebuilt generator for my K and, after struggling to install it alone, I am wondering if it has the correct tension. Is there any trick to making sure the belt is tight enough?
