Almost hate to tell you this, but the best way to determine the water line is to float it. :D

Re: Wood rot

Water will accumulate in my 17 as well. Its dry storage, but I will dry as much as I can so that only a few small puddles remain. It being florida and warm the water evaporates within about 6-7 hours. Is this ok? It "should" be ok, your problem may actually be that your boat dries out too much in t...

Yes!

Davis Slick Seam. Like drrot said it has been discontinued, but you may be able to find some out there. If not send me a PM.

Interlux seam compound is the next best thing. IMHO.

Sounds like the general consensus is the same. FB and the like have ruined many forums. John in VA also points out a reality. Many people got frustrated when the system had glitches and went away without returning. The current leadership and BOD's is doing a fantastic job trying to bring the focus b...

Re: 21 Days Off, Now Won't Start

The drop from 12.6 to 9 volts in the start position is most likely due to the starter draw. If you are getting that much drop I suspect you either have a weak battery (load test it at 1/2 the CCA rating of the battery) or you have a worn out starter. (perform a starter draw test) There are other gre...

If all you are looking to do is turn the engine over, not trying to start it manually, a simple fly wheel turner should work well.

1911tex: I am not sure what kind of corrosion you are looking for internally. Any surface rust would be meaningless, and any corrosion on the bearings would not be detectable unless you removed the bearing caps, which would require disassembly anyway. Having personally performed annual inspections w...

Since it is now Monday and you were planning on doing this over the weekend I am more curious how / what you did?

The two products "SHOULD" work fine together, however I have always been told that if you are happy with the results that you are getting why change things.

Re: Scuff sand CPES before varnish?

As far as building coats of varnish without sanding in between, I believe that will depend on the product being used. Some varnishes allow for no sanding in between coats while others suggest sanding every coat to help adhere the next coat. It would be a shame to have poor adhesion between boats 9 a...

I would think that one would want to use the Sikaflex prior to any varnishing. I will b...

Re: To Flush, or Pull the Plug

I would start at finewoodboats.com. Jim (AKA drrot) has just about everything or knows where to get it. Check for plugs in the intake manifold (above the carb) and disconnect any low hoses (usually the lowest one is at he stern of the engine going into the exhaust manifold). Also, don't forget the p...

Re: Bottom Paint on an 18' Sportsman

One very simple solution can be to crank the trailer down as low as possible in the front, block the stern, and crank the trailer nose up as high as possible. This may get you enough clearance to paint where the bunks are. Be aware this can add a lot of stress to the boat since it is being supported...

Re: Final varnish coat?

Sounds like you are on the right path to me. I tend to use 320 grit for my last coats so the scotch pad should be fine as long as you are breaking the gloss. Final coats are always touchy. If I recall correctly I like to thin to about a nine drip consistency. (Stir with a paint stirrer and lift out ...
