1942 Deluxe Utility Bow lights

Hello All, I found some components to put my bow light back together but am wondering how this actually does go together. I'm guessing there is a semicircle that goes around the bottom edge, but how does this keep the lenses in? Just by the pressure? Any leads on where I might be able to find the mi...

Re: Smith's CPES

Thanks boat_art. I will purposely leave out the areas I am embarrassed about for now. If you've seen my other post, you'll remember my goal was to keep the boat from degrading, learning and getting some practice in until I can afford to do the all out, real deal in 5 years or so. This should do it. ...

Re: Smith's CPES

I recently put CPES over Interlux filler stain without any trouble. I did have a week for the stain to really cure but only because of my schedule. You should be fine with 72 hours. I brushed the CPES on pretty heavy, one coat right after the other, without any running. Start at the lowest point and...

Re: First Time Refinishing - '42 - Part I

I know eventually wood will have to be replaced. What can I do now to make it solid and usable for the next 5 years? What is a good material to fill these voids and will take stain well and match the rest of the boat?

Any other comments or recommendations?

Thanks

Re: First Time Refinishing - '42 - Part I

Thanks everyone for the input. I've gone around and injected CPES into any areas that looked suspect, including this area. Although that seemed to sure up other areas, unfortunately, it wasn't enough for this one. Rot.jpg Some of this area is still soft. If the real soft stuff is removed, what is th...

Re: First Time Refinishing - '42 - Part I

I was wondering about injecting CPES. What's the best way to kill any active mold? I first and foremost am trying to keep the boat from deteriorating any further. But I also don't want to get in over my head, both skills wise and financially. Do you think it is possible to seal it up well enough for...

Re: First Time Refinishing - '42 - Part I

Hopefully that's not the case CQ. I haven't looked around yet though. I did get some work done on the engine cover. We sanded and attempted to pull the old stain out with thinner and bronze wool. Then just fun, we stained one side to see how it blends the colors. IMAG0114.jpg The side that was stain...

Any opinions on the rot? Should I put in a dutchman? Inject it with epoxy? Replace with new planks?

Re: Fuel System Issues...

Thanks for the kind words. Paul, Miss Conneaut is now in the process of being rebuilt. It should be in the waters of Conneaut Lake by 2015 hopefully. I'd love to hear more about your history with the boat.

Bonus pic. I love the way it sits in the water.

Re: Fuel System Issues...

Dirt indeed. After flushing gallons of fuel and cleaner through, cleaning the carbs multiply times and going through several fuel filters we finally got it in the water.

Re: First Time Refinishing - '42 - Part I

Yes, I'm using the cheap heat gun from Jamestown Distributors. I don't think it puts out enough heat to make the job easier. The varnish takes a while to bubble. The varnish on the engine cover also seemed very thin which maybe made it more difficult? My thinking was that if it were thick it would c...

Re: what's your topside sealer?

It is my understanding that loads of people use CPES as a sealer. As long as the filler is given time to cure fully and you're careful not to push the stain around when applying, it should work great. In my case, haven never done a stain and sealer job, I am worried about screwing it up and having t...

Re: First Time Refinishing - '42 - Part I

Interesting, is it easy to keep the corners from digging with that tool? Seems like comparable risk. Would having a wider blade help? Kind of makes sense to me. After scraping the varnish, I tried block sanding with 120. The paper filled up pretty quickly. Should there be a secondary scraping or wou...

Thanks boat_art. I saw the '42 on you're website. Looks like you have a lot of work ahead of you with that one.

Unfortunately my boat is some distance from where I live but I hope to get some pics go post today.

First Time Refinishing - '42 - Part I

Hello All, As the title implies, this is my very first attempt at refinishing a wooden boat. The boat in question in a 1942 18' Deluxe Utility (Hull#81300) that has been in my family for about 20 years, almost as long as I have. I'm starting this thread in the Finishing section in hopes that most of...

Re: '42 18' Deluxe Utility stain color.

I have to pole clamped together now and I think it will turn out well. I had just book marked Finewoodboats.com and Classic Boat Connection but haven't had the opportunity to use them yet. Being 6' 1'' myself, I feel your pain, Jim, when it comes to leg room. I was thinking of trying to turn a stern...

'42 18' Deluxe Utility stain color.

I had the unfortunate, but probably common, accident of snapping the stern pole on my '42.
