Re: Mystery in the Bow

Joanroy,

That is very convincing... I do have an old fresh water tank aft of the head and galley but they may have had two?? or relocated that one?? I am going to look for more clues!

Like:

Do the saddles on the aft tank look newer?
are there any lines running down the walls?

Thanks!

Re: Mystery in the Bow

Ok, checked the hull card Says these two things that could be it 18. 260-12V HORNS 21. 12V PITS SEARCHLIGHT I wouldn't think these would require the saddle but maybe the hole is for the searchlight as I do not have one currently (I wish I did and am looking for one) What does PITS mean (keep in mind...

Re: Mystery in the Bow

Well.....this makes it even more interesting that no one is quite sure....I am going to check the hull card in regards to air horns or perhaps a forward water tank. It is only 30' so there is only one head....maybe that would have fed it?? Thanks for all the interest....keep the guesses coming and I...

Mystery in the Bow

Hello All, So I got back at the boat yesterday stripping her down of hardware etc. I found a mystery in the bow. On the foredeck there is a chrome plate which covers a hole (you can see it by the edge of the anchor. It is not for the rode but the one that is off center. Inside the anchor locker on t...

Re: correct screw head - slotted or phillips

I have been unable to find an online source for a frearson screwdriver, I was able to get some insert bits but have not found any drivers.

Does anyone have a link to one?

Thanks!

Yup. That is how it is. About an 1/8" shy

Re: Stainless Steel Trim Pieces

The 1/2 rub rail on the edge of the plywood is not original. The plwyood was finished with stain and varnish like the transom. Wow! that is surprising. My plywood is not even completely flush with the transom planks. I am going to the show in St. Clair this weekend....I hope there are lots of Sea S...

Re: Stainless Steel Trim Pieces

On this subject... My 1956 30' sea skiff had two sets of metal bands at the transom and I was wondering if both sets were original?? One band is about 1/2" wide "rub rail" type half round and applied to very ends of the plywood (I would imagine this is needed and original) The other band was about 1...

Hi Tom,

I am redoing a 1956 30' seaskiff and am almost down to bare wood. What did you do for fairing, filling and filling nail and screw holes? How did it work out for you?

Re: Famo-Wood Questions

Oh and while we are on the subject. My boat being a 1956 has copper rivets instead of clinch nails. They are pretty much flush with the surface of the plywood. If I fair them with o-1/32" of epoxy do you think that will be ok or do you suggest driving all of them a bit deeper (1/16") to accept the f...

Re: Famo-Wood Questions

Thanks for all the great replies! I really have wanted to go the epoxy with 407 route as I am using quite a bit of that fair smooth the hull and could just put it in the screw holes as I go. But I have been afraid that if I ever needed to take the screw out I would be, well, um, screwed  Thou...

Famo-Wood Questions

Hello, I am restoring a 1956 30' Sea Skiff and have a question on Famo-Wood. It seems that the original screw holes were filled with Famo-Wood or similar. I am stripping the hull down to bare. Should I dig out the original and replace or just leave it alone if it is solid? Also, should I use Famo-Wo...

1956 30' Sea Skiff Dash Light Question

Hi All, So I starting taking apart my dash the other night and have a question about the dash light, the one that illuminates the guages. So what I have is a single bulb for each set of guages that is set into a tin foil lined channel in the back of the dash. then the guage is has a clear red tape a...

Great Suggestions!

Do you use the Sandusky Paint Filler Stain? I like that it is formulated to match the original.

Grant, That is a great idea to try and track down the family! I am going to do that. I LOVE dark hull boats and was going to do it dark blue but now t...

Hull card received!

Hi All, I received my package from the mariners museum today. VERY INTERESTING! There were a couple of very custom things on my boat according to hull card. These included Teak decks and black hull paint. However, my hull number sk-30-207 indicates a semi enclosed and mine is an express cruiser this...

Early Sea Skiff Transom Plank Replacement

Hi All, So I am getting into my ?1956? 30' skiff. One thing that I knew was that one of the planks on the transom was rotted because of a lousy swim platform install. So I started removing the plank last night. Now, I am a professional woodworker so fitting a nice new plank of mahogany to go where t...

Re: 1956 30' Sea Skiff Cabin Cruiser Restoration

I found my Hull Number (i think)!

It was on the starboard engine stringer aft of the engine just like it is supposed to be....I just never looked that far back. Right there plain as day.

SK 30 207

I am going to send away for my Hull Card.

Does this tell any of you guys anything?

Thanks

Paul

Re: 1956 30' Sea Skiff Cabin Cruiser Restoration

Jim, That is really interesting.....so maybe someone raised the deck or it is not a '55 or '56 (I am going to scour around that area for the hull number!) That also explains a bit of another thing I have been thinking about...I am 6'2" and standing at the helm look directly at the wiper motor and to...
