Re: Help staighten cast brass windsheid

I am not speaking from experience. I have never tried to straighten a cast brass piece. However I have been very happy With brass Castings.

Perhaps if you're straightening efforts fail you can have a casting made of the peace after you cut and reassemble it to make it into a mold.

Re: Towing tubes/skiers. 1961 CC Ski Boat

I agree with all of the warnings that have already been posted. I am restoring a a 16 foot 1946 Chriscraft. That boat was used for skiing for many years, but not used "hard", (light people - no extreme tricks). It's lifting eye was not damaged. Tubing puts much less strain on the robe. Depending on ...

Re: Now I know why they painted it

Copious amounts of 5200 is a major issue. It won't sand or grind off. The tool will grind away the wood and leave the 5200 until it clogs. It has to be cut off. Even then you'll probably be better off undercutting the 5200 in the wood rather than trying to just trimming out the excess 5200. I have u...

Re: engine stringers/keelsons replacement

Do not make the mistake I made! After you turn it over put support blocks along each side at the top of each frame and level the boat the best you can. Then remove the bottom. Then level the stringers and relevel the edge supports. Then replace the bottom frames as necessary ONE at a time! Before mo...

Re: Riviera Shrunken Deck Planks

Now I'm curious. I would think old wood would be more "stable" than new. After shrinking it will not swell back to its initial dimension, right? So, it's expansion/contraction is less than newer wood. I would call that more stable. I'm indifferent to the choice between new or re-use for my deck but ...

Re: Riviera Shrunken Deck Planks

I had 65 year old sun shrunken deck planks with gaps. I took them off and soaked them for a month. They swelled about 1/8. Then shrunk back about half that when they dried. Not enough to close the gaps. I'll replace the king plank, in the center, to get the width I need, then retrim the rest to fit ...

Re: front frame u22 sportsman

Well first you need to replace that Pepsi. Then, with an appropriate beverage, you'll need to decide what about this darn boat is level and straight. Short cut: forget about it, it isn't. Still you need some reference, so realize the only thing that won't move while you're working is the stringers. ...

Looking more closely at your picture (on my computer instead of my phone) I see that the lifting ring mount is aft of the frames in question. So, what I'm saying is: Cut off the badly split section of the frames with a vertical cut, Make new replacements for the cut off pieces (grain oriented parall...

Re: front frame u22 sportsman

I can't tell what you are doing. If you are replacing the bottom but retaining the side planks above the chine, getting that frame out would be a problem. Professional restorers with their reputations on the line (and working on your dime) probably would re plank the sides as well. They are of cours...

Assuming that you do not have a six year old child with a knotted rope ending in a rock to place in the bow, any fish finder will work. With a wood (or fiber glass) boat you do not have to put the sender/receiver unit in the water. It can be inside the boat but must be sealed to the bottom air tight...

2 giant saw horses. Locate over lifting eyes.
First lift tounge of trailer as high as possible. Tie front lifting eye to front giant horse. Lower tounge.
Block up small hydraulic pump jack to keel/transom point. Jack up boat and tie rear lifting eye to rear giant horse.

Re: Flipping a 19' Capri hull

If you support the boat at two places on the horizontal top beam instead of one so that the vertical straps are straight up, you can flip the boat by hand. I used wheel barrow wheels ( tires removed) mounted on top beam. You need much less height with the vertical straps and the "squeezing" stress o...

Casters. I built the internal supports extending from the stringers to beyond the top sides inside the boat before I flipped it. The 2X4s from the stringers up (before the flip) were all the same length and butted on the stringers. I used 6. I mounted 6 casters to those, there is additional framing ...

Everything else will be moving as you replace frames, etc.

Differences include the logo, mine had the red script. Also mine has additional vents aft. The lighter wood in the decking is ...

I do have the original planks. There is no doubt that the original bottom color was green. There is no doubt that the original hand painted logo was red. The water line stripe is the question. There is no evidence that it was ever green. All layers of paint are either white or red in the stripe area...

The Post above suggesting a fine toothed back saw with stops might be better.

I may have used the trim saw for the really angled slots. See picture of the trim saw in the How I Did It post.

Multiple cuts with the trim saw set to the proper depth will do it.
