Re: 57' constellation rudder stuffing box access
Hi John - It doesn't contribute much to bilge water, but leaks enough to keep the immediate area damp(as in the photo). I am inclined to defer addressing it until the next haul out, but I have a long transit down the coast from Oregon to SF coming up. Wondering if I can simply tighten the assembly s...

57' constellation rudder stuffing box access
umm.. yay.. I am now the caretaker of Eden (thank you Bill and Roger). I'm trying to determine if there is some way to access the rudder post to service the stuffing box without removing fuel tanks. It will be ridiculously tight, but maybe someone can tell me if I can get to it from under the bulkhe...

Re: Walker Airsep
Thanks... Looking at the space above and near the current intake (I have the 8v71s) it's really cramped up against the access hatch. Trying to picture where the actual Airsep unit is going to go, and if it is Walker that makes the transition tube to get to it?

Walker Airsep
Anyone here install Walker Airsep air filters on their Detroit Diesels? Would love to hear experiences. I've been presented with an opportunity to replace a front crank seal to fix an oil leak, and am thinking the same money might buy an Airsep install. Thanks for any comment.

Re: Sea Trial expectations - vintage Connie
:D :D Maybe final post script. Many months ago the 1955 Connie in Marina Del Rey slipped through my fingers. I learned a hell of a lot in the intervening year, and spent a hell of a lot on 3 additional haul outs, offers and surveys(I did the math - its was cheaper to do the 4 surveys this year than ...

Re: Sea Trial expectations - vintage Connie
Post Script - I was too slow closing, and another buyer appeared when we fell out of contract. He got a good boat for a good price. Lesson learned. Still in the hunt. It turns out, it is ALWAYS a buyers market for way too big way too old and way too wooden boats!

Re: Sea Trial expectations - vintage Connie
Thanks Jim for your comments on the engines. The transmissions are Allisons, and seem to be in good shape. I'll make sure to have the big fire extinguisher available!

OK.. final sale docs signed and money being gathered from all corners of the continent. So.. here's a pic or two. We'll see how she looks after 400 miles up the California coast late August..

Re: Sea Trial expectations - vintage Connie
Holy mackerel I've met a lot of codgers and characters trying to sort out this engine. Second diesel expert said it sounded fine, started right up, oil samples tested clean, runs on all six at 1800rpm unloaded - just buy it. (He didn't want to run it WOT at dock). Asked him if he'd cruise it 400 mil...

Re: Sea Trial expectations - vintage Connie
Thanks all. Can't tell you how helpful this input has been. Trying to get second motor survey. Really want to get this boat... just would rather not have a $30k+ surprise on the trip home with her. Totally ridiculous.. buying an old gigantic boat and not being a millionaire. Its like watching a slow...

Re: Sea Trial expectations - vintage Connie
Well.. here is sort of a picture. Actually of the wake of the boat showing smoke from starboard engine at minor throttle up. That look blue or white to you guys? https://www.icloud.com/attachment/?u=https%3A%2F%2Fcvws.icloud-content.com%2FB%2FAY2UYpoUkbEAGOKl6t7YuoA0VfTrASzmhXSqCii10yYEOMHmxNexmojn%...

Re: Sea Trial expectations - vintage Connie
Oh, I think I agree John. I don't think there is any purposeful concealing of problems. I just think the skipper thought he had her as full throttle as he could get her. Which, coincided with a lot of white smoke from that starboard engine. So I'm going to ask for the throttle linkages to be checked...

Re: Sea Trial expectations - vintage Connie
Thanks again all - Good advice and taken to heart. I did get her out again, and though the broker/skipper had the throttles as far forward as he could get them, it wouldn't budge past 1500+ RPM/+/- 9.5knts. As far as he was concerned, that was WOT. I did some online checking (the WEB must be hell fo...

Re: Sea Trial expectations - vintage Connie
Thanks all. She is being hauled later this morning, and we will certainly be pulling fasteners! I don't want to ask the current skipper to over stress her for my curiosity. But wondering if I should be worried about an issue hidden by the very delicate trial. Were she new, we would have had her up a...

Sea Trial expectations - vintage Connie
Hi all - Potential newbie here. I am forgoing psycho analysis in favor of a very big very old Constellation ('56, 54'). Question - On sea trial this morning, the selling broker didn't spool her up beyond 1500RPM/8knts. The Detroit Diesels have <2,000 hours on them, and the engine surveyor indicated ...
