Proper Fasteners for Step Pads
Would a show judge please comment on the correct fastener type for the chrome plated, rectangular step pad? The boat is a 1949 25’ Sportsman. I seem to recall a judge told me many years ago that the screws are chrome plated, oval, slot head but would appreciate confirmation.
Thanks. Mike

Re: Side plank seam repair
Check the carriage bolts that fasten the frames to the chines. You can do this from the bilge by trying to tighten the nuts. If the nuts seem to tighten the carriage bolts are okay but if they seem to spin the carriage bolts are broken and need to be replaced. Since most of these bolts are below the...

Re: K engine distributor shaft and oil pump
The lower end of the distributor should have a flat blade that is milled into the round shaft. The top of the oil pump has a slot that accepts the blade. The connection is a slip fit.

John: I can't help on your ammeter question but for fusing you only need to fuse accessories. Such as bilge pump, blower if you have one, navigation lights, spot light, etc. Don't fuse leads from the generator/regulator or horn. You should have a water temp gauge that starts at 100 degrees unless yo...

Be very careful on how much water you put in the boat before launching. A little at a time is okay to keep the bottom wet. But too much water could pull the bottom planks away from the frames.

Re: Scuff sand CPES before varnish?
It is my opinion that you should sand between coats but I would start by sanding with a scotch bright pad. I find the burgundy color is best. Use that for at least the first 5 coats. Don't "sand to snow" or "white-out" as some people call it, until you get about 10 coats on or you risk sanding throu...

If you are going to paint or upholster the motor box you can buy 1088 marine grade plywood at Public Lumber on Seven Mile Rd. in Detroit. They won't have a mahogany veneer but carry other veneers.

Re: ZENITH CARB LEAKING
If I recall correctly there is a hex head nut that holds the packing washer in place. If there is very little resistance when turning the adjusting screw try tightening the nut. It should tighten the packing against the shaft of the adjusting screw and eliminate the leak. If that does not work I ima...

Re: Removal of a broken engine plate drive screw
If the broken pin is below the surface you can use a drilling tool made for drilling in the center hatch bindings and hinges. This tool is a "must have" if you are drilling piano hinges for engine covers or hatch bindings. If the broken pin is above the surface you could make a jig plate with a hole...

My suggestion would be to use the product that the linoleum manufacturer recommends. I used Forbo Marmoleum on two restorations and the company that sold it also sold the adhesive.

A couple year ago I restored a 1948 U22 #1216. The hull card read Blue Tolex and the linoleum was gray marble. When I purchased the boat the interior was red and the flooring was red indoor/outdoor carpeting. I needed to repair a piece of the mahogany in the rear seat back. When I disassembled the s...

The "loose" cushions are gone. I stated they were original based on the fact that they still had the US Deptartment of Commerce approved tags for flotation. The base cushions or spring sets still had the cotton covers stamped with Motor City Spring Company and the hull number. I still have the sprin...

Kapok Cushions & Spring Sets
I have completed the leather interior in my 1949 25' Sportsman with twin engines. I decided to not use the original springs nor the kapok bags that are in the loosee cushions on top of the base cushions. The leather cushions are cracked and torn but the kapok bags seems to be intact. I am wondering ...

Re: Shipping a cruiser overseas
If the beam is under 8' you can probably fit the boat in a 40' container. That Would be the safest and least expensive way to transport it. Dockwise would be very expensive. Deck cargo may require a steel cradle so they can weld the cradle to the deck.

Other than Classic Boat Connection and Top Notch Fastnings does anyone know of other suppliers of statutory plated screws? Specifically I am looking for a source for #6 x 1"statutory plated stainless steel self tapping screws or wood screws.
Thanks.

Sending Unit was not the culprit afterall. Mark Clawson sent me a new sending unit that I fortunately tested before going through the headache of installing in the tank. The gauge then read 3/8 at empty to full. The opposite of the original problem. Mark offered to let me return the sender for credi...

U22 Sounds Like A Fog Horn
I have a '48 U22 with a 1" prop shaft and a K engine. At idle and through about 1100 RPMs running in gear the boat runs very smooth and normal. Any higher RPMs in gear there is a sound coming out of the bilge reminiscent of a fog horn. The prop has been reworked and the engine is in perfect alignmen...

I suggest you consult a company that specializes in straightening. They have experience in straightening the various metals as well as the jigs required to hold the parts during the straightening process. I would ask them how much experience they have with brass castings. Good Luck!

Re: Registration numbers under varnish need changing
I am the previous owner of the17' Deluxe Runabout. The registration numbers are under approximately 6-8 coats of varnish. The numbers were produced by a vinyl graphics company. They are only a couple years old and would not have any UV "shadow" as the boat was seldom in the sun for prolonged periods...
