Re: K Motor Zenith 8983 Adjustment/Repair
You turn the fast idle T screw clockwise to make the mixture leaner, and counterclockwise to make the mixture richer.

I think the T-screw is the high speed mixture adjustment. The low speed mixture adjustment is done with a regular flat head screwdriver.

Re: 1942 K Motor plugs rapidly fouling
Check the float valve, making sure it is not stuck open or partially open with a speck of rust or something. Then check the float level for the correct setting. If those are not the problem, check the fuel pump to be sure the check valves are working. That is assuming you still have a mechanical pum...

Re: OK, there is the finished product
Most likely that you won't find a timing mark on the flywheel. Find TDC as described in other posts and paint a mark on the flywheel and a fixed point on the flywheel housing. Use that as a reference and advance the timing to about 5 degrees before TDC with a timing light. I had a 95 HP K and it ran...

Re: OK, there is the finished product
Depending on what engine(s) you have 700 rpm is OK. Slower and the generator will not charge the battery. You asked in another post about a backfire. That is caused by unburned fuel. Possibly due the the timing being off slightly.

Re: 52 Holiday Transmission question
Welcome to the club! I believe the idle speed and the transmission both need adjusting. Using the transmission "1/2 way forward" will wear out the bands in the transmission. Having to hold it in reverse will do the same although some have it adjusted that way on purpose. I have mine adjusted so that...

Re: Thru Hull Fittings
I do not know if there is a common location. In my Sea Skiff the pump near the helm is located adjacent to the fore drain plug, at the low point of the hull when in the water. I located the water discharge thru-hull as close as possible to the pump, about 18 inches above the water line, so that the ...

Re: Torque that manifold
I have not used the spray products you mention to find cracks. But it sounds like a short cut version of magnifluxing which clearly shows where the cracks are located with a dye that stays in the cracks. If you have a small crack, depending on the location and length, the Permatex might seal it up f...

Steve: I used Permatex Form-A-Gasket in a tube. It's black and gooey, non-hardening, and difficult to get off of your fingers and clothes. But it really seals. You can get it at any auto parts store.

Re: Torque that manifold
I believe when you remove the stud you will see that the threads in the block end in the water jacket. I have had a leak as a result of this before. When I coated the all the threads with sealer it stopped the leak. If you also coat the shaft of the stud and the hole in the manifold through which th...

Re: Torque that manifold
It could be a leak around the studs or a very small crack. Try taking the stud out and putting sealer on the threads and the stud entire stud shaft before you put the manifold back on. These leaks are hard to find.

I agree with davidvn. I have had that happen. Tapping the top of the float bowl near where the fuel line connects to the float bowl solved the problem for me.

Re: Hard to start model K
That is interesting; good detective work. Do you have an amp gauge? If so it should show when the battery is being charged. So, it seems the battery isn't being charged while the engine is running. Why don't you charge the battery with a charger before you buy a new one? However, I'm not sure what t...

Re: Hard to start model K
Looking back on my old notes, I found on the K engine I had and on the M engine I had, that I had the timing set at idle (500 to 600 rpm) about 5 degrees advanced checked by using a timing light. The engines idled and ran well at high RPM with this setting.

Re: Hard to start model K
Check the timing, with a timing light if you can. Your post above "To set the timing I started by lining up the bolts horizontal on the flywheel when #1 was at TDC. When it started it seemed I needed to advance the timing alot before it ran smooth, almost to the next cyl." leads me to believe the ti...

Re: Hard to start model K
You are right to say you should not need starting fluid every time you try to start the engine. Also, fuel pressure won't matter when you are starting the engine as the float bowl should already be full. The problem could be many things but I would look for a vacuum leak(s). With an updraft carburet...

You do not have enough air circulation and I had the same problem with a full cover. I used an electric dehumidifier on my '49 CC 27 foot cruiser. I set up a drain to the bilge and the bilge pump removed the water as necessary.

The impellers in the pictured water pump, and on my 283 engine, are rubber. The pictured implellers are worn out. Re: One side of engine hotter than the other
There are two impellers in the pump. One is for the port side of the engine and the other for the starboard side. If you take the pump out to replace the impellers you will see what we mean. There are other posts about how to replace the impellers.

Re: '62 Chris Craft 18' Holiday
My Sea Skiff with a 283 has a 1:1 gear ratio. I'm not sure if the gear ratio in reverse is any different. How fast do you want to go backward anyway? I don't know if this helps but I feel the runabouts and utilities of the 50s and 60s had 1:1 transmissions. There is an excellent article in the curre...

I have destroyed several rubber impellers as a result of using a garden hose for a water source, despite numerous warnings on this site about not to do that. Now I run a hose into a five gallon water bucket full of water and let the pump suck the water up and into the engine. I keep the bucket full ...
