Re: 1949double cabin flying bridge cruiser
The Essential Guide lists twin WR's or Chrysler RM8's in the originals. If she has 350's now, it would be much more practical to stay with them. Although it may be nice to have original power, it's doubtful that it would add much to her value in the future.

Re: Titling My Boat
John, It's not a bad idea to keep track of boats that no longer exist. Some day someone may be interested in which ones not to look for. I'm sure that Don Ayers wishes that some of the pre-war Barrelbacks whereabouts (or lack thereof) were now known. If you have the hull number, put it on the Hull R...

Re: Two piece transom frame ??
John, the lower part of that frame doesn't appear to have any original bilge paint that the upper part has on it. Is it the same on the port side? If so, I would guess that it has been repaired. Except for the chines under the cabin sliding windows, those corners are the next most vulnerable area fo...

Awesome Matt! I missed out on the beginning of your project but with those time-lapse videos I caught up rather quickly (reminds me of the ant farm I had when I was a kid).

Mark,
It will keep that meter spinning when in use. When running full blast it could add as much as 50 to 75 cents per hour to your electric bill to use, so remember to turn it down when you don't need it. You'll definitely notice an increase in your winter electric bills.

Re: Paint colors
There's a 1956 Chris-Craft Sea Skiff Color Brochure in the Archives under Marketing Literature that shows samples of some of the colors. White, Buff, Green & Black ones are shown. They were also available in Blue, Yellow and Gray. What was the original color on yours? I have found that its easier to...

Re: Bilge cleaner
When I first got the cruiser I found it difficult to clean under the engine with much success. My son-in-law (at the time) suggested soaking puppy potty pads with Dawn and slipping them under the tight area and let them soak for a day. It penetrated the scum under there fairly well and loosened it e...

The Fahrenheat 5000 will probably keep your shop warm on cold days. I have an insulated shop that's about 500 sq. ft. and use a 4KW electric unit heater that keeps the shop toasty on 10 deg days. It's 240 volt single phase and uses a 30A2P circuit breaker. Mine has 2 settings; 4.0 KW and 2.7KW and a...

Re: screws
Nothing wrong with leaving "well enough" alone. Those old planks have made it this long without epoxy of any sort. I did have an area under the massive toe rails on the forward deck that was discovered while repairing the deck plywood. For this area I did soak it with multiple coats of CPES after sc...

First, welcome to Boat Buzz. Thanks much for posting photos of your boats, and your handy work on that cast header. Hope it holds up well. Wow! Interesting that a 36-foot Chris-Craft Cavalier Sea Strake is in Sweden. She appears to be in fairly good condition. I believe these were delivered with Chr...

My Connie was planked with solid mahogany outer planks on a plywood inner surface. I used CPES on the almost completely bare bottom planks (only one coat) years ago before applying ablative antifouling bottom paint. It served 2 purposes; one was that it formed a good primer for the bottom paint to a...

Michael, Welcome to Boat Buzz! And to the Club! I think Michael was looking at photos in the Hull Registry. There are quite a few 1929's in there that are painted red. That sounds brutal, Matt! All the more excuse to go south in March.
In case you hadn't heard, the 1955 Chris-Craft Cobra is the Feature Boat at this year's show. Several of them will be at the Sunnyland Show celebrating their 60th birthday. Can't wait to see them.

Corrosion occurs in fresh water areas too, just not as bad. Best wishes on finding a cure for that. LOL How difficult are the intermediate rails to remove. The side rails appear to fit over the stanchions through a hole. I would fear cracking the mahogany rails. The aft ones appear to be supported w...

Re: 1969 CC Corvette
We kept our cruiser in an oversized covered slip on the Mississippi River above St. Louis and spent a few winter nights aboard her. Re: 58 Connie Re-finishing hand rails
Troy, yesterday I posted another time that I applied CPES, but unlike the bright work, it was on the bottom planks. It was expensive and messy, but was the right application for the stuff. Applying it before the bottom was painted worked very well. Besides serving as a primer, it also helped extend ...

Re: 58 Connie Re-finishing hand rails
When I had my little 27' Connie I stripped an area of highly exposed wood and applied CPES (after staining) and then varnished over it. As long as I applied new varnish (with good UV protection) every year or so it held up well to the sun and weather. The varnish held up better there than other area...

John, Sorry that your post isn't getting much attention so far. The pealing paint indicates that it didn't adhere to the original surface, be it paint or bare wood. The first time that I applied bottom paint to my former 27' cruiser over existing paint I experienced the same problem. The next summer...

Re: New Officers
That's a great looking cruiser and represents one of only 34 of them built in 1968 & 1969. Both Chevy and Chris-Craft borrowed the Corvette name from European Navy ships in the same year of 1954. Of course, the breed of Corvette that Chevy created is still going strong, but didn't make huge splashes...
