Sounds like you have a real good start. What I do next is called a strip wash. The way to do this is to get yourself a clean 5 gallon of warm to hot water and a tarry cloth towel (I like to use a white one). I would totally agree that the 31 is the identification for the size and a way to keep things straight at the time of production. The place where i have seen them the most is on the sides of the engine hatch covers. You possibly might also find them stamped into floor boards and under seat bottoms. The steam or forefoot could have the size of the boat stamped into it like 30. One time i did see it written in crayon type pencil...
