Precisely!

Matt and I spell finetically. Speaking of which why is that word spelled with a ph? Isn't that against the whole concept?

Re: Bad coil?

Glad to hear the problem is solved! FYI: I was always taught that the reason for a coil failing when hot, but working again when cooled is because it is just what it says it is. A coil of wire inside. If the wire has an open in it the flow of electrons will jump the gap when cold and close together ...

Re: Mast lights for 57' 1968 Constellaion

I would think there should be a white mast light at the top. I don't know what would be in the middle unless it was equipped with Port and Starboard lights on the mast. Don't recall seeing that before, but stranger things have happened. Have you checked with Jim Staib (DrRot) at finewoodboats.com?

If you are in the stage of "considering buying" I would recommend a very very deep analysis of your cost to restore this boat before you purchase it. The fewer surprises the better.

Re: Post-War Custom Hull ID Numbers

This does not pertain to your boat, but I find it interesting. In the Holland plant, where cruisers were built, the parts would be marked and held on the second floor. When the assembly line was ready the part was lowered to the first floor for installation in the appropriate boat. It is not...

Re: Post-War Custom Hull ID Numbers

The smaller boats were not numbered as frequently as the larger cruisers. To my understanding stringers are usually your best hope. I have also heard of markings up forward under the bow.

Good Luck!

The boat is trailered , so don't have luxury of soak.
I soak with a garden hose. Spraying the hull inside and out (not filling the boat with water) while on the trailer.

Okay Troy - you win. You must be psychic. Mark Not psychic, just dealing with old original style bottoms myself. Re: 5200 paint

The trouble is not the expansion of the 5200 (IMHO), but when the wood swells it will expand and 5200 does not give so you may end up with buckling or other problems. Most boats under 30' don't need any caulk at all, just some pre-soak to swell the wood before launch. If one does need to caulk one s...

Sounds like it is too late for this comment, but 5200 should not be used as a seam seal, In My Humble Opinion.

Dig it out before it dries if you can.

Re: Leaky bilge

I am with Bilge Rat on this!

Slick Seam is a great product to help fend off water while the planks swell, but if swelling is not preventing the water infiltration it sounds like it is time to start pulling planks and see what is really going on under there.

Keep in mind that there has been a "rash" of bad condensers over the last several years. They work out of the box, but not for the whole season. :(

I know some don't like but I have changed all mine to Pertronix ignition without any problems at all. :D

Re: Bottom plank caulking

This size boat should not need caulk. On our 21' Continental I use a hose to spray the hull inside and out a few times a day for about one week before launch (she is double planked without the plywood). This will help the planks swell before launch. It is also a good idea to let them set in the wate...

Re: Vapor barrier under berths

I also think a vapor barrier is going to cause more problems than it will solve in the long run. In the south people run their air conditioner to reduce moisture in their cruisers. Living in the north and being on a mooring where I am not hooked up to electricity I use DampRid products. I have had t...

Re: Do I need 4 wheel drive?

In most cases you should not need the 4wd, but that one time that you are on a steep slippery ramp and can't pull your boat out without having someone with a tow strap hooking up to your truck to pull you up the ramp it will be worth whatever you have to pay for it. Of course these situations always...

Hi GB: I agree with Nemo on this. It sounds like you received some bad advice regarding your engines, that being said the 71 series are tough engines. As far as removal goes I think Nemo again has an interesting proposal. I have also heard of many rebuilds taking place in the hull if there is not to...

Gladly! If you look back at the first page of this thread you will find that Peter Jardine referred to this type of building as a Stimson Bow Shed. What we did was create a jig on a full piece of plywood. Using 1X4 green hemlock we bent the boards on the jig and placed 2X4 blocking in between the bo...
