Re: Restoration Progress

The smaller runabouts without a wood backer paralleled the waterline anywhere from 3/4" to 3" above it, depending on where the plank batten fell on the side of the boat in relationship to the waterline to screw too.

On the larger boats with the wood backer, the rail paralleled the upper rub rail.

Re: What is it?

Hull numbers can be hard to find on the early boats. Mostly just the loose items like floorboards, seat frames, and hatches. Sometimes you will find it on or above the port chine at the bow aft of the cutwater but that usually has been sanded off.

Search it. It has been covered here many times.

There are Custom's and Deluxes but not Custom Deluxe's? Also 17' or 19', no 18s.

Re: Waterline paint on 1951 CC 18' Riviera

Anti-fouling bottom paint is not normally used on these runabouts, especially if trailered. It just isn't as pretty as a high gloss enamel or polyurethane which is what is on 99.9% of these boats when a color other than copper-bronze. Riv's had a double waterline stripe, white over red. If you want ...

Green bottom, white waterline in 1929. Unless hull card specifies something else ordered.

What pictures? Everything from '29 is black and white? Except the cover of the catalog which is a painting (green bottom white waterline there too).

Re: Is this what Special Flame Carpenter looks like?

Here is a Mint Green 1957 19' Capri cushion that were kapok in this case and had the perforated sides. In one of the late 1950s parts books it shows replacement cushions like this, kapok with the perforated sides. You are right, the tag will tell (when you can read them).

Re: Is this what Special Flame Carpenter looks like?

Jim, If you have an extra sample to spare I would appreciate it. All I could find on a 21' we worked on a few years ago was very small remnants on on the tack line. My address is in the big book. The foam loose cushions are a funny thing... I have seen original kapok cushions as late as 1959 in some...

Re: Is this what Special Flame Carpenter looks like?

There are are three black alligator materials I would consider: Paul Cundiff's is the closest to original, but is the most expensive and yardage comes on a 48" roll instead of the standard 54", and timing is always questionable. Classic Boat Connection's is good, is a tad thick and glossy compared t...

Re: Is this what Special Flame Carpenter looks like?

Getting closer... The face of the seat backs does not bulge at the top like you have shown, it is on a flat plane with the squares. The squares are what is called a "biscuit stitch" which the thread does not show on the face and falsely appears to be individual stitched squares on the face. The back...

Re: Is this what Special Flame Carpenter looks like?

Sorry, I meant add just the line separating the squares and top section of the seat back fronts, not each individual square. Add one horizontal welt line. Also there is a flat section on the bottom edge of the seat backs about five inches wide that covers s transition between the back and spring bas...

Re: Is this what Special Flame Carpenter looks like?

Good diagram, very helpful. I believe there should be white piping (off white, I use a color called Adobe) between the carpenter squares and plain top section. Other than that it looks good. Cushions are two inches thick, welt to welt. Remember the squares are flat, not puffy. Crash pad is four piec...

I only know that the "27" prefix was for southern California boats and "28" for northern California boats. Jim's pic was taken off Catalina Island. That is Preston Foster behind the wheel. This is Streamliner #2 from 1938 delivered to Newport Beach. The first two had canvas decks (this one and Blyth...

Also, prlentz, in the club archive there is a 4-page brochure in the 1938 15.5' that you will want to look at.

Re: 1938 sportsman deluxe 15.5 ft

So in summary you have a 1938 15 1/2-foot Sportsman, hull number 52059 with maroon Russialoid (leatherette) upholstery and linoleum flooring. Not a Deluxe Runabout, not a Sportsman Deluxe. Sportsman is spelled out on your data plate. Your hull card saying "Runabout" means nothing, this was just the ...
