Re: Jabsco water pump
This problem solved....for now. I pulled the water pump and saw that the tongue (?) on the shaft was partly worn where the collar rubbed. I loosened the nut on the back the engine and was able to move the tongue forward to engage the collar. Whoever worked on the pump last reinstalled it with a thi...

It doesn't do it to me. But then I don't get emails for new post on threads I've posted on. I've got it turned on in my control panel. But it hasn't worked since they did the update thing.

Wired this way is negative ground. I have seen these engines run with the battery hooked up either way.Katanna wrote:Engine is original 283 flywheel forward. blue wire from harness goes to positive side of the coil. Negative from coil goes to distributor.

ATF in the trans and 80-90w in the v-drive. This is the guy that can answer your questions.

Thanks Mark - I'm assuming the lever coming off the fuel pump goes under the lifter inside the block based on the shape. Is this correct? Did you use gasket sealant when you attached the pump? Also, are there any Torque settings for the bolts that attach the pump to the block? - Ken The lever rides...

Being a 1977 boat. If it has the original carb. It should have the fitting in the carb for the small tube from the fuel pump. You need to make sure you have a marine carb.

Re: Dual exhaust for 283 in a 55' Sportsman
My 283 uses newer Osco manifolds in a three way system. They were the only (new) option at the time I did the rebuild but I heard they want out of production. Osco was sold about 4 years ago. The new owner sent all the patterns to China to have the castings made there. I heard that he caught them s...

Does it have Osco casted on the top of the manifold between the 2 plugs? If they are your good to go.parksman wrote:This is the port side manifold. But there is a starboard side available.
The center part will work on either side. Its only the end plates that are port and stbd specific.

Re: Dual exhaust for 283 in a 55' Sportsman
If its the flywheel forward 283 its a 3 pass system. If you use the Barr manifold on it. You can have overheating problems with it. As long as the repaired one is not leaking to the inside. It will work.
If its the 283F flywheel aft. Then the Barr will work.

I restored a 1946 Gar Wood 19' runabout. Every screw in it was a slotted screw and it won best in its class at the Antique Boat Museum show. Don't get to picky with whats correct on the post war ones. As the Gar Wood boat company was putting whatever they had to get them out the door.

Re: Dual exhaust for 283 in a 55' Sportsman
Its a Chris Craft 283. They were all plumbed with 2 1/2" exhaust hose and about 2 feet or less of copper pipe going through the transom.
Or in the case of a single exit exhaust it was 2 1/2" exhaust hose to a wye then coming out with 3 1/2" exhaust hose to a short piece of copper pipe.

From the factory Chris Crafts with 283's with dual pipes would be 2 1/2". 283's with a single exhaust outlet would be two 2 1/2" hose into a wye from the wye to exit through the transom would be 3 1/2".

Re: Awful Discovery, a Crappy 90's Restoration Job
A lot of boats were done like this until the economy crashed. Which is why a lot of restoration shops went under. They were charging about half to three quarters of what a quality restoration shop charged. I lost a lot of jobs to them. Which in the long run I was happy I did. As those owners were ba...

C was originally spot welded to the backside of A. Part be is missing the small bolt that pulls it together. You should see 2 small holes on the arms. The round part of C fits into the round part of B. The missing bolt adjusts the tension to hold the throttle lever in position. The throttle rod goes...

The best way to check to see how good your advance is working is to get a timing light that you can advance. What it will let you do is 2 things. First you can rev the engine to any rpm and move the advance on the timing light and when the mark comes back to the pointer the timing light will tell yo...

If the trans is slipping in forward gear it will act just like a worn out clutch in a manual transmission car. With just you in the boat you should at least get 2500 out of the engine. When rebuilding these blocks a lot of them will have one or more cracks in the deck. Some of the cracks there is no need to worry about them. Some will need to be pinned. A job that any good machine shop can do. Then there are a few cracks in certain places that just make the block no good. One of t...
