Re: Faring and filling. What to use on a 1961 Chris craft
I was going to comment on how much I liked the 'skirt' that collects the nasty bits. Mucho good on you to take care of the environment! As JR points out, some excellent products around, but the best stuff is worthless without proper preparation. I will check out the Interlux product when the time co...

Re: Faring and filling. What to use on a 1961 Chris craft
That is one BIG boat you have there, and I am delighted to see the work you are doing. For our 1937 35' cruiser, I will use filler (likely Famowood) for any screw hole that will be under paint. I have been cutting plugs from the clean parts of original pieces that I had to replace because of rot and...

I'm preparing the outer planks for the bottom. Pictures like this one remind me of why I am enjoying the reconstruction of Elude.

I don't know your gear, but it looks identical to mine. I can't check it out right now, but I will take a pic the next time I am at the boat. The diagrams are from the manual shown in my last post.

Re: Chrysler M 47 Crown 115 Hp Engine
These should help but there is variance depending on the gear. The dimensions vary with the gear a little bit and alot with the v-drive. The manual you can order on-line. I have twin M-47s in our cruiser and also had a pair in an Owens I owned in the early '80's, which comes to about 30 years of har...

Re: Hull Construction- wood type
It is hard to tell from the pics, BUT..... why are you replacing the stringers? They don't look compromised to me nor do the frames at the points the stringers where attached to them. That is where I would expect there to be rot. You have them in your hands (which is why it was important to remove a...

I think it looks really cool showing its years.... I wouldn't shine it up at all. Only my view, but I also do not intend to re-plate anything on my old boat.

The bow inner bottom is completed and dry fit. The frames and keel/stem rabbets are faired as is everything else. Come spring it will be drop, seal, goop, re-install. Goodnight Mrs. Calabash, where-ever you are......

Re: Honey, have you finished fixing Elude yet? 1937 35' Crui
Are you going to flip your R+W? It is 25' (I think) which is pretty big. I would really like to see some pics of that! I see the attraction of the plastic nails and firing them in with a brad gun. I suppose it will depend upon the frames and the material you use to repair or replace them with. White...

Re: Honey, have you finished fixing Elude yet? 1937 35' Crui
JR. I just took the following pics of an inner bottom plank that I intend to turn into dowels. I think they will illustrate answers to your questions. One thing to keep in mind, the hull was upside down when assembled so the workers could use their knees and body weight to press the inner planks snu...

Re: Honey, have you finished fixing Elude yet? 1937 35' Crui
JR, a cold molded bottom is beyond my experience so I cannot comment on that. With regard to my plan to attach the inner ply bottom, I intend to use 5200 on all the contact surfaces (chines, frames, keel, keelsons, transom...etc.). When dry fitting it became apparent that even with the rather gentle...

Re: Honey, have you finished fixing Elude yet? 1937 35' Crui
Getting close to finishing the dry fitting of the inner bottom at the bow. I need to re-do a couple of small pieces at the most fwd part of the port bow to get a more precise fit, but that is just being fussy. The fit for the rest is good, and the intermediate frames will pull any minor uneven seams...

Re: Honey, have you finished fixing Elude yet? 1937 35' Crui
I have finished machining the inside of both new chines and the inner bottom is dry fit and in place for the winter. I seriously underestimated how long the job would take. I will drop it and do the permanent installation in the spring when it is warm enough to use 5200. I think I have reached the p...

Re: Honey, have you finished fixing Elude yet? 1937 35' Crui
Thanks guys. The port chine bottom rabbet has been machined and sanded to its final dimension which enabled me to start to dry fit the inner bottom plywood sheets. I will trim the excess off the bottom of the chine cap when the outer planks are dry fit as well. I still have to do the same to the stb...

Re: Honey, have you finished fixing Elude yet? 1937 35' Crui
I have started to finish machining the chines in order to get the inner bottom on for winter. I tried fitting the plywood inner bottom on last week, but with so much excess material still on the chine caps, I could not squeeze them in. As you saw in earlier posts I left the chine caps quite "fat" wh...

Re: Honey, have you finished fixing Elude yet? 1937 35' Crui
These pictures finish up the previous post. Only one more gusset and frame set to take apart on the port side, We will have warm weather for a few days yet, so if I hurry I can finally have it all done. That means next spring it is all about installing the bottom. I will make the new outer planks ov...

Re: Honey, have you finished fixing Elude yet? 1937 35' Crui
Thanks John. The forecast for Toronto calls for relatively warm temperatures. Consequently I have decided to do repairs on port vertical frames near the stern that I was going to postpone until the spring. I made templates for some gussets and a section of vertical frame that was badly split. I cut ...

Re: Honey, have you finished fixing Elude yet? 1937 35' Crui
Since my last post I have managed to just about finish the port chine to the point where I can install the inner bottom. Unfortunately I would be racing the cold weather so I have decided to do a final dry fit of the inner bottom with the plan to drop it out in the spring and do the final installati...

Re: Paint Question
I posted this before but I will add my comment to this thread too. Much like Joanroy, I wooded my cruiser and applied two coats of Interlux Brightside primer, sanded translucent, then two topcoats of Brightside with light sanding in between. I applied it with a brush and it went on very nicely. It i...

Re: Honey, have you finished fixing Elude yet? 1937 35' Crui
The list of jobs for the stbd bottom restoration is getting very short. I have been painting the frames and gussets as I go along with Sandusky bilge paint (cc red). It goes on really nicely and seems to penetrate very well. Occasionally I have had to sand a bit down and I have noticed that it gets ...

Re: Honey, have you finished fixing Elude yet? 1937 35' Crui
I had posted in August that I had finished all the frame repair. Since then I decided to clean up a few that I thought weren't too bad. I am glad I did, but the end is near....happily. I wanted to show the stbd frame end and gusset where I had to remove sound deadening material and a bit of the bott...
