Re: Meco Refrigration Inverter
Good to hear that mechanically the fridge is working. I'm sure you'd like to keep it as modern fridges probably won't be the same dimensions forcing you into some cabinetry work. The old inverter's function is basically the same as a modern one, to convert 12 volt house battery to 120 VAC power. How...

Re: Meco Refrigration Inverter
Wow! Back in the day of tube radios in cars (and rural farms that didn't have electricity yet), the power source was a battery and the circuit used a "vibrator" to change DC voltage to an alternating polarity which, after feeding through other power supply rectifiers, generated a form of AC voltage...

Re: Mystery Riviera Light Bulb Socket
A picture of the actual bow light might help as there were a few different ones that Chis Craft used, or it could be a non-original Chris Craft part. I have seen some bow lights where the light socket was screwed to the deck.

Re: Exhaust backfire on start up
Drove a company truck once that had some valve issues and raw fuel would leak down into the exhaust after shutting down the engine. It took about 10 - 15 seconds after shutdown and then you'd swear someone fired a gun out the back of the truck. That was an amazing after-fire.

Re: 1942 K Motor plugs rapidly fouling
The immediate thought would be the altitude: Higher altitude = less air = less fuel needed. You know that the carbon fouling is too rich a mixture but what is causing this is the question. You didn't go into detail on how the engine performs otherwise; hard starting, misfire, sputtering when opening...

Re: KFL 131HP questions
Here's a link to the manual on a KFL. It says RPM limit is 3800. It talks about 10 hours as the break in period but no sustained high RPM running, whatever that means.

Re: Oil change on an M engine
Most people remove the transmission cover and pump out all they can get to after pumping from the dipstick. Some know which transmission cover bolt to remove and pump from there. You never will get it totally empty as there are some baffles in the pan that make pumping tough.

Re: KFL 131HP questions
I had a 17 foot Sportsman with a rebuilt KLC 120 HP engine. With the original prop, the WOT revs were limited to about 4000 RPMs. It did have a redone bottom that was clean and nearly flat in the aft planing section (important to obtaining maximum speed). I never did a GPS speed check but I felt it ...

What does the plug fouling look like?
Black and sooty?
Shiny and oily?

Re: CHRYSLER ROYAL ENGINE stalling more frequently
Years ago when I was still tolerant of old outboards, I had a similar issue on a 15 HP Evinrude. It would run fine until a certain high speed spot and then misfire and quickly die. It would restart only to intermittently do it again. I looked at the two plug wires, coils and all looked great so I th...

Re: Correct Wiring on Ignition Coil
Charlesquimby is correct on using proper marine rated wiring. Fusing is very important and as said before, extremely lacking in the original factory wiring. Important to note that solid wire should never be used on a boat, it cannot flex enough from the boat vibrations and movement and will fail. Al...

Re: Correct Wiring on Ignition Coil
Yep, the coiled up slack is just a way of neatly dressing the extra wire for any future need and helping to prevent a taught wire from vibrating loose while underway. The factory did this so if you're looking to appear "original" replicate it.

Re: Hard to start when hot
Well after re-reading your original post, I see you're using a Pertronix igniter so no points in your distributor. I would have to believe the same caveat about leaving the key in the 'ON' position applies as the igniter would still be conducting depending on the position of the engine.

Re: Hard to start when hot
For a 6 volt coil, there really isn't a high performance version that I am aware of. The only difference I have seen in old type coils is whether a ballast resistor is used or not. I never saw a 6 volt ignition that used a ballast resistor. While you're at NAPA, buy two as coils have a habit of quit...

Re: Correct Wiring on Ignition Coil
That is a circuit breaker, anyone's guess as to what it was wired to. At least it looks like someone used crimped terminals instead of just wrapping the wire around the screws. In 58, small boat wiring was pretty sketchy as compared to today's electrical requirements for safety. Typically two or thr...

Re: vacuum carburetor synchronizer
You might want to verify that the choke plate isn't partially closed on the carb that isn't pulling the same amount of air. I had a 62 MGA with difficult to sync twin carbs and jets until I discovered that the choke wasn't pulling evenly on both carbs (had to disconnect the choke linkages to see thi...

Re: Gas tank cleaning or source of a new one
I had RAYCO fabricate a 50 gallon aluminum Coast Guard approved tank for me about 6 years ago. The cost without shipping back then was $575.00. Since then RAYCO has been sold, but his fabrication, welding and dimensional accuracy compared to the original Lyman tank was excellent. This was definitely...

Thanks to all who have replied. These answers are exactly what I was looking for. I'm not after amazing speed from a 61 year old hull design, just a reliable power plant that doesn't require a ton of modifications to fit, and a ton more to be dialed in.

Repowering a U 22
I'm looking for opinions and maybe real life "been there's' from others. I am restoring a U 22 currently with a Chris 327 flywheel forward engine and a custom made engine box that has got to go. I am fortunate to also have the original engine box as well. The 327 runs well and has good compression (...
