Re: Plywood underlay for hull sides

Just to follow up, I decided to use the old planks in the normal fashion-no plywood. I did replace a few planks that were badly damaged. The problem with 3/8" planks is that they are too shallow to use bungs over the screw heads so all holes are filled with Famowood as was done for this model from t...

I bought this engine as a fresh rebuild but have not run it yet. The oil line is connected up under the generator.

Personally I love the top and would keep it even though it is likely not factory.it looks well done and suits the boat.

My 25' Sportsman is powered by a 454 with left hand rotation and I have no issues other than having to remember it backs to the right. Have other people had problems with left hand rotation?

Re: Plywood underlay for hull sides

To be honest I have no idea how thick the original planks were. However the stem and chines have been replaced and it appears that 1/2" is required. The main reason for using the ply is that I am using the original 80 year old planks and I am sure they are not as strong as they once were. Thank you ...

Re: Plywood underlay for hull sides

What got me thinking of doing this was that the original planking is only about 3/8" thick from being sanded over the years and that seemed thin to re-use by itself. Combined with 1/8" ply I will get original thickness of 1/2" as well as a much more stable hull side.

Plywood underlay for hull sides

I know this has been done but I have never done it. I am beginning restoration of an 18' 1935 utility. The side planks are good but a little thin. Here is the method I am considering. Remove all the side planks (hull is braced internally) and clean up the edges. Fill old screw holes in frames.Cut 1/...

It should be the same user name and password as you use to get on Boat Buzz. If it still doesn't work, contact [email protected]

Re: 2016 Board of Directors Election - Biographies of Nomine

Just an addition to Troy's post. The board recently moved that the Editor of the Brass Bell should have an automatic place on the board. Therefore, Steve Griffitts will become a director on January 1, 2017. What this means is that, of the three candidates named by Troy, the two receiving the most vo...

Re: throttle tube with horn wire

Looking at your pictures I think we have a question of part names. You have removed what I would call the throttle tube, the piece that contains the horn wire and is held in with the throttle arm at the base. The other part down there is the throttle brake which creates friction to hold the throttle...

Re: throttle tube with horn wire

The only thing holding the rod from coming out of the steering column is the little arm that connects to the throttle linkage. There should be a bolt and nut clamp that should loosen to set free the tube. Can you post a picture?

Final report. New spark plugs and professionally rebuilt carb. I installed it today and starts and runs like a champ. Before you install one of these, make sure all the old gasket is cleaned from the manifold. Just saying. I probably needed a practice install anyway!

This is the trailer for my Red and White. It shows another way of making the guard. It has about 7" of clearance. Picture is a little hard to see as I was trying to hold tree branches out of the way!

The trailer picture I sent before is not mine. Just something I found on the internet. I will post mine here. The clearance is about 5". Every time I pull out of a gas station and I hear it scrape, I smile!.You can see the gravel from my driveway. I have a steep incline to my shop.

You can go as low as you want. Just build a "prop cage" with a heavy cross member under the prop and rudder that is strong enough to occasionally drag on the ground.

Panel 1935.JPG I am beginning a restoration of a 1935 18' Deluxe Utility and I believe this is the correct panel. I love the spinning tachometer. Does anyone restore them? Also I was wondering what the face of the panel should be. Rust was probably not an option! This was a low end boat so maybe ju...

On my type of actuator you can see how the forward part pushes into the rear part. I have used a large c-clamp to keep the front part from pushing into the rear. Not pretty but my shop has a steep driveway.

Re: Rough starting with an M

I have owned this boat for 25 years and have had the engine rebuilt twice. It has been consistently the best starting boat i have ever owned. I would pull the choke all the way and crank and it would fire almost immediately. I would then go to half choke and it would start. I would then push choke i...

Re: Rough starting with an M

I do have a spin on fuel/water separator but it has not been changed in a long time so I will do that. Also I can not remember the last time I changed the plug so I will do that as well. To clean the carb do I just carefully remove the screws and separate the top and bottom? Then take things apart a...

Re: Rough starting with an M

I pump the fuel pump and then go full choke for the first attempt. It fires and I push the choke in. It usually starts but runs badly and pops. If I try to accelerate it stalls above 1500. I take the boat out and gradually increase RPM. As long as I take my time I can get it up to max RPM after a wh...

Rough starting with an M

For the last few weeks my M engine starts but is rough and kind of pops. If I accelerate in neutral at the dock it stalls. After 10 minutes it is warm and runs like a champ. I tried adjusting the idle mix screw but it makes no difference. It is out about one and a half but all the way in or out seve...

I have the solenoid as well but have had trouble backing up a grade. How do you mechanically lock out the brakes? That would be handy!
