Re: New engine update
Ok here's the latest, I checked TDC and 0 mark on the harmonic balancer is TDC on #1 on the compression stroke so cam timing is correct. I swapped out the distributor for another brand new OEM electronic GM distributor and had same results...engine starts and runs smoothly/accelerates very strong ju...

Re: New engine update
The distributor is an aftermarket unit recommended by drrot. It was the only electronic I could find that had a mechanical tach drive. One thing I have not tried but will today is I never did confirm that the piston was actually at TDC when the timing mark was at zero, that would confirm proper cam ...

Re: New engine update
It starts and idles just fine at 20+degrees before. I have moved the distributor drive gear 1 tooth then two to the point where it's closer to normal static advance- anywhere between 0 and 10 before but it doesn't like to idle. it requires quite a bit of throttle to keep it running and it has very p...

New engine update
Hi all, I hope you have been enjoying the summer. The new engine is finally running on a regular basis. After being plagued with several bugs that cost me lots of extra time, I am finally able to get some hours on it. I am running it on a stand in my garage and presently have about an hour or so on ...

Transmission oil filter
I just posted this over on the Commander forum but I thought I'd post it here too. As we all know there is no oil filter in the Paragon "P" series transmissions and I just wondered if anybody knew of a reason why a remote engine oil style filter could not be installed in the lines/s from the transmi...

Re: Well WTF?
HAHAHAHA, no way. I'm way too deep into this. Get your own :D I resolved the second transmission leak today, I also did some checking into what I ordered from Sherwood and found out that they sent me the wrong seal kit for my circulation pump. I did notice the difference when I got the parts but I a...

Well WTF?
O-ring came for the transmission today, Exhaust manifold spacers also came. After dinner I got it all put together, fired her up again and she won't pull water on the raw water pump and then the circulating pump starts leaking like a sieve. Did I mention that I spent a small fortune rebuilding both ...

Re: It's alive!
Well it's the little details that drive me nuts! I've been plagued with little unforeseen things that are slowing my progress. After the first fire the other night I had a transmission leak that turned out to be a faulty O-ring. Of course it's a special size and only available through Paragon. Anoth...

Update on painting the bottom
I'm waiting for a couple of last minute items for the engine project so I drifted back to the bottom paint. If you recall in my last post on this subject I had just painted the bottom with Epifanes 2-part polyurethane and though the product was good I did not get the results I was looking for. I cal...

It's alive!
Well as you know I've been working on many things along the way but as of 15 min ago the new engine lives! I got everything hooked up temporarily and it fired right up without issues. I did not have water hooked up so it only ran long enough to check oil pressure and timing before I shut her down. I...

Repairs are done
Well progress continues on the Commander project. All fiberglass repairs are now complete including the new shaft tube and bilge bay is painted. It's been a long process with sharing time between work, engine and hull repairs. The hull has been the most challenging because as you know my work area i...

Re: right propeller for 22ft SK - 1957
Steve, Correct prop sizing is a science, there are direct relationships between diameter and pitch for each application but a quick over simplification would be that diameter produces torque and pitch produces speed. There are several places on line where you can give particulars about your boat and...

Project update
Well the weather cooperated a little this weekend and rather than continue with the engine reassembly I concentrated on finishing up some fiberglass work related to the new engine beds. I also got the new shaft tube glassed in though not complete. First coat of paint on the bottom, sorry the picture...

Yup, will do. The weather report is still good for tomorrow so I will get some pix and post them. I will also be doing the last of the fiberglass repair to the stringers and I will get some pix of that as well. When does everything get less expensive??? HAHAHA. I picked up the new carburetor this mo...

Progress with the Commander
Well I thought I would update the project in a different topic. It finally stopped raining long enough to put a coat of paint on the bottom of the boat. Engine reassembly will resume next week. As you know I decided on Epifanes polyurethane for the bottom paint, in fact it will be the new finish on ...

Re: Oil for the new engine
I found out something interesting today! While at NAPA picking up some various sundries I asked for the mysterious Pennzoil Marine non synthetic 15W-40. They called their Pennz rep while I was there and this is the scoop right from Pennzoil; Pennzoil marine 15W-40 has been discontinued and their rec...

Re: Oil for the new engine
I picked up the new starter today, I decided to go with a new GM 1-wire alternator versus rebuilding the old whatever-it-was external regulator one. That will be ready for pickup on Friday. I got the transmission reassembled last night and after a few coats of Chris Craft blue will be ready to attac...

Oil for the new engine
Ok time to stir this pot again, The age old question about engine oils. In the paperwork that came with the new engine they specify 15W40-preferrably Pennzoil marine 15W40 and for the duration of the break-in period-NO SYNTHETICS! Let me start by saying that I cannot find this Pennzoil product anywh...

Interesting point about searching for info about my V-drive, I've been looking all over the internet and As many of these drives that are out there it amazes me at the lack of definitive information.
