Re: Updating Fuel Lines/Model K
Doug, the Experimental Aircraft Association publishes a monthly magazine that typically has at least one article written by a member describing flying mistakes he/she has made. This months story had to do with a pilot who landed a sea plane in the water with the wheels down and lived to write about ...

Re: Copper Tube
I keep on forgetting to google questions. I found this: http://www.eaa.org/experimenter/articles/archive_tubing_bending.pdf on line. Sand is apparently the best way to go but I also found someone who used water with detergent (to prevent the water from freezing solid) and letting it solidify, which ...

Re: 17' Deluxe Runabout 1946-1950
If anyone is interested, I have a spreadsheet of the 52 Runabouts from the CCABC directory. I will add the boats at the larger brokers. If less than 5% of the 17' Runabouts are currently registered, there are a lot of potential CCABC boat owners out there. OR, perhaps they are less common than thoug...

17' Deluxe Runabout 1946-1950
Stuck in the house because of the cold weather I went through the 2013 CCABC boat registry to see how many of the 1880 of the 17' Deluxe Runabouts built between 1946-50 and came up with just 52 on the registry. I included the boats under various catagories as long as they had the R-17-xxx hull numbe...

Re: Copper Tube
We have two different conversations going on now. I am referring to the small diameter pipe used to move water from the block to the exhaust elbow on a K. It is not the 2.5 inch exhaust pipe (which I replaced with the help of Don Danenberg last year). There might be some blowback into this tube whic...

Re: Copper Tube
I plan on using sand but it is too dang cold to go to the work shop. I remember watching a movie years ago about a plane that crashed in the desert and they made a single engine plane out of a 4 engine plane. They bent tubes by putting sand in them first. I will see if it works some day.

I have not had a chance to call yet. I heard one place is charging $200 for 1.5' of copper pipe. I am going to check locally and will try bending one myself. I was expecting some info from DIYers. Can't be that hard to do. I will let you know what I find out.

This subject is a number of years old but addresses my problem. I need a new Water Overflow Tube for a "K", Part number 57-51646. Anyone know where I can find one? What does it take to make such a tight bend in a copper pipe?

Careful on how you remove the pulley. It is very easy to chip it. I know I just did it a couple days ago. Time to buy a new one.

Walnut stain
Does anyone know the history of using walnut stain on Runabout king planks? The Essential Guide indentifies pre war Runabouts with dark planks but post war are all natural decks. My '47 Deluxe 17' has walnut stained king plank and covering boards. Might the stain be a post construction modification?...

I have had boat insurance through Auto Owners for the past 25 years or so. Very reasonable addition to my home insurance policy. I have not had a claim yet but don't expect a problem with coverage. Three boats insured at this time.

Re: 1947' 17' deluxe runuabout
Could somebody with a 17' Deluxe Runabout be able to measure the length of the floor of the back seat? I have 11" which is not enough for a man's foot. I am thinking of moving the front seat up a couple inches to make it more comfortable. Regarding information on 17' Runabouts, there is an article f...

Re: Knowing one khaya species from the next
Anyone else watch "This Old House" on PBS last week? They are rebuilding New Jersey shore houses and the porch on one house was being covered with mahogany because as the builder said, "it is straight and resists rot". No idea what species of mahogany they were using but the wood looked pretty nice....

Re: Trailer detail - at what height to support the cut water
Good information. I think I will add a "V" bunk at the bottom of the cutwater (as in the second photo) which along with the existing bow stop should help. I like the idea of marking the strap to show how far the boat should be snugged. I am also considering a short piece of elastic at the end of the...

Re: Trailer detail - at what height to support the cut water
With two years of launching and recovery at various local marinas under my belt, I need some advice. I had a trailer built for my 17’ CC Runabout with a long tongue to help launch in shallow water. I can back the trailer in far enough to float the boat off and on, though at some ramps the tires drop...

Re: Inside storage in Michigan
I wouldn't get too hung up on the need to store a boat on gravel instead of concrete. Concrete has less porosity than coarse gravel and can wick up more moisture from the underlying soils, all things being equal. Of course a plastic layer under the concrete changes the game. If the underlying soils ...

Re: Prop Shaft
After trying to find a cheap option for my boats loose shaft/coupling to get through the season, I went ahead and ordered a new prop shaft and coupling. Re: Prop Shaft
Further investigation determined that the shaft is worn and is loose in the coupling. Cranking on the set screws moves the coupling out of alignment. Is it practical/possible to install a shim around the shaft as a temporary fix to finish out the season? If so, any idea where I could get a piece of ...

I took the coupling off the shaft and found the remains of a brass key in the coupling. It looks like the key might have been sheared off at some time and never replaced. I appreciate all your help. Now that I know what to look for I will disassemble the shaft and coupling. Thanks for the drawing. Never having seen the front of an engine, I am assuming that a counterclockwise rotation of the flywheel (looking from the front) will result in a counterclockwise rotation of the generator.
