The handle is correct. They were used on the 50's boats. There is usually a number or the abw emblem stamped on the underside of the flanges.

Phil, The perfect fix for a hemi is to put a chris craft engine plate on it. I would suggest one with a chevy firing order that would make the hemi purr.

I don't have any chrysler plates if you have a good example I can see about getting some made.

Cut a slot in the head. The cutting wheel on the dremel tool works good. Then use a screwdriver to undo them. If this doesn't do it then you will have to drill them. If you mess your plates up I reproduce them them for all the CC engines.

Re: 350 in 283 Disguise

I agree with the ease of a bolt in design. The 350 in 283 dress parts is a true vintage look. I would do the dual exhaust for the sound effects. If I go with the 350 I might want a bigger prop and changing the angle. Also, I need a new shaft to replace the original. What transmission have you used ...

Use the CC 283 flywheel forward set up. Chris Craft designed it to drop right in place of the K. You might have to add some wood to the length of the rear mount block. You might be able to reuse your shaft if its a stainless steel one. The 283 set up is 1/2" shorter then the K. But the angles are th...

If the boat filled up with enough water it can push through the rear seal. the rear seal is installed to keep the fluid in the trans not to keep fluid from coming in from the outside. The same thing goes for the rear seal on the engine. If the seals are really worn it is easier for this to happen. A...

Those were optional wheels in the early 50's. I have them on a 18' and a 22' sportsman. They are shown in the 50's accessory catalog. Century also used them. I have also seen them on the Willys Jeepsters. I haven't seen it on a Riv or Holiday, but this is the 1950-52 Racer standard equipment banjo w...

The multi digit number is the IBM part number system chris craft went to in the late 50's. jim staib might be able to cross it back to the older number if it was used on earlier boats. Exactly what model do you have?

I own hull # 35 and it has the same wheel as # 10 but it doesn't have the extra ring on it. It is also the same wheel thats on my 1941 25' sportsman #24 out of 25 made. I've also have seen the same wheel on the 1940 and later barrelbacks.

If the cracks are small you can fill them with cold epoxy by permatex. If the fumes have an oily smell it will be from the crankcase vent. It doesn't always leave a mess. Also check your exhaust elbow real good if its a cast iron one. They get eaten away from the inside and can crack or get a small ...

Whats you see cracking is an exhaust chamber. Its cracking because of the cast iron rusting and expanding outwards. Don't worry about it intill you see or smell exhaust gas coming from it.

Chris Craft replaced the aluminum head with a cast iron head in 1939 and the K's became 95 hp and the KA was dropped. The replacement iron head is the same design as the aluminum head. K's before 1939 were 85 hp and the KA were 95hp. So yes your motor is still a KA 95 hp.

The wood will not absorb water by putting it in the water for a few minutes. If it did you could swell your boat up in an hour. It will be completely dry again in a week.

I would suggest the same thing mfine suggested float the boat and see how bad it leaks or you could use a hole saw and take a core sample out of the bottom and see how the bottom was put together. I had to take a core sample on a boat that a customer bought that was supposed to have a 5200 bottom. T...

To remove the copper rivets you just grind off the peened over shank till its flush with the rove. A mini angle grinder like the one shown in danenbergs book with a 2" 50 to 80 grit disc. Then use a straight shank punch and knock the copper nails out. It won't take you long to do it. Saw a guy in Ma...

Did the rebuilder use new pistons or did they knurl the old pistons to take up for the wear. Was the engine overheated on the first running of it? If so this will glaze the cylinder walls.

Make sure you use break in oil for the first 20 hours or so. The rings will not seat in if you use regular oil from the parts store. see link
