The proper 'ceremony' is; Check oil level in the engines. Check raw-water filters, hoses and clamps. Check free movement of thru-hull sea-gates (grease same and check hose clamps). Check running gear operation (steering, reverse-gear, and throttle linkages, bilge pumps, anchor and line). Check batte...

Forrie started at the Cadillac plant in 1946, as a 'hull-dresser', fairing topsides with a round sole handplane. He was apparently not aware of how they were finishing the 20-Custom that year. He wasn't the quality control manager when he began. I recently received the loan of some 16-cans (mostly n...

A correctly done '5200 bottom' includes 10-mil (4 to 6 coats) of Interlux 2000E Barrier Coat Primer before a couple coats of bottom paint. This keeps water out of the bottom planking. A '5200 bottom' without the barrier coat primer would be a BAD thing, the planking could swell from one side and cup...

Become a part of the solution, then; NOTICE that the Brass Bell is just the same antique concept, just as valuable for the same reason! Raise the DUES! What Hell, Double them to $70 per YEAR!!! Quarterly, that would be $17.50, right? Is this not collectable, even framed and glazed and sold on E-bay,...

The locking tabs are in the exactly-wrong-place, they should be on the flats. I'm surprised that your shaft coupler's pilot bearing even fit! Use a hammer and flat-blade screwdriver to release those washer-tabs, use heat if solder exists. I don't 'do engines', but you used my name twice, as if I did...

The problem is the Gulf Stream, called 'Florida Current' in that area, moving north at roughly 4+ knots (5+mph). Problems arise when the wind is anywhere from the north, which stacks the seas quickly to 15ft+ against that current. For a realatively low-deadrise CC cruiser, taking these seas on the b...

Before caulking bottom plank gaps, please read this 1931, Gar Wood factory to dealer memo. Chris-Craft was too smart to discuss possible failure modes, they just warned that if the bottom planking was allowed to become saturated, the excess weight would prevent you from reaching advertised speeds. h...

That card did come from the Cadillac Plant, they were not on the water and so the dealer was required to watertest the boat, note the title at the top. A videotape, available from the Water Wonderland chapter, ACBS,and CCABC, shows a question and answer session with Chris Smith. He watertested boats...

Thanks to everyone for learning this stuff, the hard way, as I did. "Steam" is 'water' at 212-degrees; not anything lower (at sea level), or higher (unless under pressure, not needed or wanted). Isn't this the fun stuff? $600-Valve? Yeah, that might make it easier to do artistic forming of wood.., b...

I would not expect to see this fire extinguisher in a boat, as fragile as they are. These can be found in attics, most realitive here would be the general offices of the Herreshoff Marine Museum, in the third floor above my '85-'90 shop there. These were, perhaps, installed there a century before. H...

What is true, is the fact that while the 20-Custom's sheer-shelf, hull/deck, construction made it easier to produce on the assembly line; Restoration, or even Preservation (construction made that unlikely) of a 20-Custom, is far more time-consuming ($$$$$$) than a 19-Custom. Where are the prototype,...
