Re: Trailered hull bottom paint

The strategy to eliminate scuffing is to avoid dragging the boat up to the bow stop while any of it resting on the bunks. You want to float on and attach to the bow stop and then slowly pull out making sure the boat lines up on the trailer. If marine carpet is waterproof and dries fast then that is ...

Here is a photo of the back of my dash. Newer model than yours.
The middle gauge is the tach (cable not connected). On either side is the navigation light bulbs. If you follow the black wires they go to the navigation switch below. Power comes from a hidden fuse block.

Re: Spining Screws

If you have room get a very small flathead screwdriver and get the blade under the head and apply pressure upward while you unscrew the screw (by hand would be preferred. The screw should pop up at least enough to grab it. You could also try a screwdriver with the holding prongs attaced. Good luck. ...

You are not going to get any opinions here on professional restorers as it just starts a huge back and forth argument and it is impossible to tell who is stating facts or just backing up their friend, boss or other. Your best bet is to talk to people in your local chapter or maybe you someone will p...

Re: Three's a Crowd

As a general rule of thumb anything within proximity of the engine that is not fused can wire directly to the generator output using a ring terminal (not a spade terminal) and locking hardware. Anything else that is fused should go to a marine rated fuse block like Bilge Rat has suggested and again ...

Re: Bottom Paint on an 18' Sportsman

Well there are several options - you could try and find some used boat stands to buy or maybe borrow from someone and place them in an already painted area under the transom. You could also build the wooden lifting setup that most use to flip their boats and get two chain hoists and lift the boat up...

Re: Final varnish coat?

I agree with your apprehension in sanding and buffing and prefer the raw sheen of the varnish after the last coat.

To answer your question no you cannot "patch" in varnish. Where you start and finish will show so unless you do an entire area that has a border of some sort.

Hi Rick, The generator is actually not generating at low RPM and does not kick in until higher RPMs when it supplies power to the electrical items and charges the battery. It sounds to me like your generator is working fine. What is happening is your generator output is open at low RPM and then at h...

Look inside a modern car engine and you will not see an exposed electrical connection anywhere - including the battery and spark plugs. This is not by accident but a safety improvement in modern vehicles to prevent what we are talking about. Obviously the right way to prevent an accident is to never...

Re: Wood repair in Virginia

Hi Mike, I cannot help on your Virginia repair recommendation but I will say that you should not have any rollers on your trailer or this will continue to happen. Your trailer should have all carpeted bunks for "float on" trailering where there is little or no contact with the bottom until your bow ...

Oil pressure drop

At the end of last season after the most use in 3 years my KL oil pressure dropped from 30 to 10 lbs. I was concerned but not overly as the high use was always in the back of my mind. Fast forward after the end of year oil change and topping off prior to first run and oil pressure was back solid at ...

Have it pressure tested and find someone that stitch welds cast iron.

If the crack is internal then throw it away and get a new one.

Re: 5200 paint

5200 expands as it dries and can put stress on the nearby wood planks. I guess it depends how much you applied to the joints. If you end up leaving it then you should wait 2 or 3 days and then look at the seams and see if the 5200 is proud of the joints. You may want to trim it flush before painting...

I cannot find a voltage range anywhere on line but I would be surprised if it would actuate with only 6V. No idea about a dry climate but I would say you are better off with outside hull moisture. Build a couple troughs under the hull and keep them full of water. Better than wetting the floor. Still will be an uphill battle if your hanger has a concrete floor.
