Baby Moon Trailer Hubcaps

Post by jbyers » Thu Sep 15, 2016 11:38 am

Once again, I went off on a tangent and bought some Shore Station hubcaps on Ebay. The inner lip on the caps is about 7 1/2 inches in diameter. It doesn't quite fit the wheels that are currently on the trailer. Since the tires are pretty old anyway, I am looking at finding a wheel/tire combo on which the hubcaps will fit. Can anyone recommend a good source?

Thanks,

I did John, but if I can't get the wheels that they will fit on, they're just wall hangers............

If it is a single axle trailer you should be ok with the correct size. If it is a dual axle trailer you will have issues with them coming off. The rims flex badly when backing / maneuvering and they come off. I got tired of picking mine up all the time. My 2 Cents.

It's single axle Tom. I just can't find any wheels that the hubcaps will fit.

Ok, so if you are looking for new rims and tires...what size are the present rims and total tire size info?

Those are so cool I would consider cutting the snap on lugs off an old foreign car wheel...like an earlier Mercedes and tack welding them in the right place on a new...or even the old rims...the lugs with the little spring loaded ball the pops under the rim of the hubcap....

John,

They are 10 inch, five lug wheels. I am not sure of the tire size. I think I could go up as big as 13 inch wheels and still clear the bumpers on the trailer.

Are these clips what you are referring to? I had thought about that but would really like the old style wheels that would fit the hubcaps. I think they call them conventional wheels/rims, but so far I can not find any advertised that fit the caps.

Those are one version...but the ones I was posting about you would have to cut off a foreign car wheel and spot weld on to yours....little square deals with spring loaded ball that pops out after the hubcap flange has cleared it...snap...

You still have not mentioned what size your current wheels and tires are....maybe you could find suitable substitute/advice if we knew that....

I assume you have 12 inch rims???

Thanks John. 10 inch wheels. I am not sure of the tire size. I will check when I get home later. I think I could even go up to 12 inch wheels if those would fit the hubcaps.

ten inch wheels = odd ball? and not big enough...those suckers will be FLYING AROUND THE AXEL at 70mph vehicle speed.
You need to research and retool I think....just my opinion at a distance

I thought so too. It's a small trailer of course. Just a 15 foot boat. There is not a whole lot of clearance between the tire and the bumper, but I think I could go up to at least 13 inches and not scrape the bumper.

OK here are some pics........ the wheels have Bearing Buddies on them. Definately not original. Probably worth more than the trailer itself......

Does that 9 on the sidewall mean 9 inch tire/wheel???

I found some 10 inch wheels at Northern Tool that the hubcaps fit perfectly into the open cavity but they don't fit snug enough. I would still have to put the clips, or whatever on the wheels to hold the hubcaps.

If I go larger than 10 inches, I imagine the opening would be too large for the hubcaps to fit correctly into. I may be stuck with 10 inch wheels even though as you can see there is enough clearance between the wheel and tire to go larger.

Looks like Moody self service wheels. Carry a spare tube and tire and 12V compressor. If there are issues on the road you can fix it yourself.

You may well be right Jim. If I recall correctly when I went to register the boat and trailer after I bought it, the woman at the County told me it was first registered as a Moody brand trailer. I don't see anything on the trailer itself to indicate the brand.

I am going to have to change the wheels and possibly the hubs anyway to get a wheel on there to which I can attach these now growingly expensive hubcaps...... Although if these are the original wheels and perhaps original bearings, who knows what shape they are in.
