I hope this isn't sacrilege

If it doesn't pertain to metal, wood, wire or fabric—but it is about vintage Chris-Crafts, ask your question or give your advice here.

I hope this isn't sacrilege

Post by jbyers » Sat Dec 03, 2016 8:06 pm

BUT I just bought a 57 or 58 Slick Craft Boat. The company was started in the mid 50's by a man who worked for Chris Craft. They only built the "moulded mahogany plywood" boats for about 4 years and then switched to mostly fiberglass. The first owner had this boat over 50 year.

I am attaching an ad from when the boat was previously for sale as well as the restoration photos. No offense to Cavalier but I think truth be known, this guy was a little more meticulous in his woodwork.

Please take a look and let me know what you think. If you know anything about these boats please let me know. I have only located three of the plywood models online nationwide, so it goes without saying there is no club like This one where you can go for advice.

Thanks for looking.

I do have a question however..........

I am going to have to get the registration numbers and stickers off both sides of the boats. I am not sure if they were put on on top of or under the varnish.

What am I up against here?

Congratulations! Looks like a super boat. there was a slickcraft dealer in seattle in the 70's. never realized they had made wood before fiberglass. No doubt someone with specific information will chime in soon.

As for stickers, if they are on top of the varnish, they should be easy to remove with a hair dryer, as long as you are careful not to get the area too hot.

Great looking boat. Love the gold Johnson.

Here is a thread on removing numbers from under varnish. I am sure there are more if you search The Buzz.

Here is a nice article on Leon Slikkers and his boat building accomplishments from the Holland Sentinal/Hope College (my alma mater) joint archives in Holland, Michigan. He developed the Slickcraft, Tiara, S2, and Pursuit lines of boats. My family had a 21' fiberglass Slickcraft for a couple years in the late 60s. It was a very nice boat.

Thanks John. Original owner had it 51 years. The second owner restored it......... so he took the monetary hickey. Lots of work went into this boat.

I have found reference to the most recent restoration being done by Firehouse Boatworks, Holland Michigan with the historical advisor being Geoffery Reynolds at Reynolds Runabouts.

Do any of you guys know either of these people?
