Carport for Boat

Post by Jim Godlewski » Sun Aug 27, 2017 1:50 pm

I'm thinking about a carport to cover my overflow boat parking area. Halfway down on the sides for light and air flow. Probably 23X13X7. I don't want to stick build. I will be able to roll the boat into the garage when I'm working on it. Any pro's or con's on this?

I keep my whirlwind in one of those, that size approx....the metal ones we have everywhere around here....ugly...gut very functional....inexpensive and when it ages out....trash it.

Is it rated for Michigan snow load ?

If not you may have to clean it off with a snow rake like I do with my vinyl portable garage.

Good Point Mark! Here in Va. we don't get enough snow to worry much about load....but where you all are...maybe totally different story and matter of real concern???

My buddy has one for his boat and one for his tractors. They work well.

The only challenge I have seen is that the "ribs" on the roof go longitudinally so the snow does not self release. I suspect you will want a snow rake like Mark is suggesting.

They have a frame upgrade from 14 to 12 gauge that would help and you can get the roof ribs orientated vertical to help with the snow.
A 23x12x7 with half walls and a back gable wall is 3k.

Well... the city denied my permit for the carport. They said I can have only 2 outbuildings on my property. My shed and my garage and that's it..

I could but I'm not sure that will help. I'm also advised the size is over the allowed 144 square feet. My son said it's easier to ask for forgiveness than permission.
I have two options that I'm working with at this point. 1. go in front of the zoning committee and see if I can somehow get a variance to exceed code. 2. Get a good down to the waterline cover with good support to repel the water and leave it out in the elements.

I'm thinking the second choice may be ok since I need a cover anyway and I would have a nice open area to restore the boat. The cons are the boat cover and trailer (once I get one) will be out in the elements.

I do have the option to pull the boat into the garage when I need to be enclosed for finishing so that helps on the 2nd option..

I now have plan C http://www.shelterlogic.com/shop/garage ... heavy-duty
This may be a good solution for my needs. This is considered temporary so no city involvement with this...

Those work well.

Just do it, because out here they are saying "There is no such thing as a temporary building."

I agree with your son....just do whatever and plead ignorance later....they will obviously be able to identify with ignorance.....
