Looking for Help Deciphering My Hull Card...

Post by North Woody » Thu Sep 06, 2018 1:28 pm

Having gotten my hull card from Patti at the Maritime Museum, I’ve updated everything in the Hull Registry to reflect the original specs of my 1936 19’ Runabout. However, I’m having a hard time deciphering the “Extra Equipment” section that was hastily scribbled down back in April of 1936, so I’m hoping you guys can help me with deciphering what was written down.

To my untrained eye, it likes like the two items are “Engine room lights” on the first line and “Extra Shaft” with some additional illegible writing on the second line. Here’s a picture of my Hull Card which I hope you guys can help me read so I can accurately know what these items are:

Does my reading of this look right to you guys, or are these something else? Thanks in advance for any help in solving this mystery of poor handwriting :)

Looks like "extra shaft nut and key" to me which would make sense as they could get lost off of the prop shaft.

Thanks Mark, that makes sense ... I thought it may have been "Shaft, strut and key", but nut makes more sense!

Engine room lights? That seems like a strange option for a runabout to me. I suppose it’s possible. :? Might be handy for changing out a set of points at night.

More common than you might think. Seen them spec'd on a number of hull cards. Most boat houses were dark even during the day.

I would guess there would be some sort of markings as to where they were. Holes. Plugged holes.

Early boats from Chris Craft had them. The 1930 20' that I restored had one in the engine compartment. The 1929 we are restoring now has 2 in the engine compartment and the 2 1929 28' had 2 in the engine compartment as well. They all came with the same style switch and light bulb socket. It said nothing on the hull card though so I think it was just standard. You could also order a key hatch lock to lock the hatches so no one could hot wire your boat. There was a main knife switch in the engine compartment that turned the power off to the coil.

Cool, thanks Greg .... I was hoping to have somebody confirm whether or not this appeared on other hull cards so thanks for jumping in on this. It seems like an interesting option, I’ll poke around in the engine compartment and see if I can find any mounting points where they were placed. Once again, this forum is an absolute treasure trove of info on these vintage boats!

This is awesome, thanks for the additional color on the engine room lights - I’d love to try to reinstall that set up if I can find the original parts. And thanks for the bonus info on the engine hatch locks. I actually saw that on my hull card under “Special Equipment” where it notes the addition of “Lock - Engine Room” along with a key number and wondered about that, but now I know thanks to your great info :)

Is there any chance that you could post up a pic of where the two lights were mounted in your ‘28 and ‘29? My Runabout is 300 miles away up at the lake so I can’t try to find the previous mounting holes for another few weeks until we’re up there again ...

I imagine the original light fixtures would not pass today's CG standards as they probably didn't have sealed globes for the engine room. I'm guessing they just used the same ones used for interior lighting on cruisers back then.

Ditto for the knife switch. Probably not the modern no arc types that are fully enclosed.
