Decent mechanic in Seattle area?

If it doesn't pertain to metal, wood, wire or fabric—but it is about vintage Chris-Crafts, ask your question or give your advice here.

Decent mechanic in Seattle area?

Post by Horstuff » Thu May 31, 2012 9:37 am

I need someone to remove my old Paragon transmission from my 1948 M engine in my enclosed cruiser, and then replace it with a spare that I have.

Does anyone know of a good mechanic in the Seattle area who can come to the boat and do the job while it's still in the water? Oh, and... it would be nice if they weren't too high priced :)

I would recommend Jim McNeilly of McNeilly's Marine Service. Jim is an older guy and has been working on these things for close to 50 years. He rebuilt my Scripps for me and does great work. He also specializes in CC transmissions. His shop is on Lake Union and I would recommend giving him a call.

Thanks for that info. I may end up needing it... the previous owner gave me the name of a guy real close to the boat, but it's unclear whether he still works on these or not. Thanks again.

I second the suggestion for McNeilly....but: you want someone to come out to your boat, and then use your parts, and then pay them as little as possible....I'm not seeing much incentive for a skilled experienced technician here.....

I only said it would be nice if they weren't too high priced... I fully expect to pay way more than I can afford right now to get this done.

You are probably looking at $2000 using your parts...and thats if he doesnt find something else wrong that should be addressed while hes down there.....It is a Boatt (bust out another 2 thousand).

I can add that McNeilly is not cheap, but he is very good and he stands by his work. He was up-front with me at the start and I highly appreciated that.

Good luck getting the work done, by whoever you end up choosing.
