Barn Find

Post by Pete DeVito » Sun Feb 17, 2013 6:56 pm

56 or 57 17' sportsman
No clue as to what a boat like this is worth. The bottom has been fiberglassed. The engine KLC, instruments and chrome all finished and packaged up. It would be a nice project if I was not in the middle of another one. The boat itself is no more than a pattern boat but still great to see inside and out of the weather.

I am no expert, but not much. Parts perhaps, if there are any that are usefull. Does it come with the trailer? This is not an expensive boat when done so it stands to reason that the costs of doing it will exceed the end value. As such, it has to be worth very little. For those inclined and looking for a significant personal project it might be worth picking up for a couple of hundred bucks but beyond that it is hard to see any real intrinsic value.

I was thinking of makeing a little gentlemans racer out of it. Since the decks would need to be replaced with everything else on it I would just move the fuel tank to the fwd seating area and drive from the rear seat. It is nothing I would spend the money on originality so I thought it would be a fun boat to fool around with. Good thing all the hardware is with it and already replated.

She looks better than a "pattern boat" Gray boat for sure...but someone CAN DO that project.
Clearly, as said, you have to be in love with that boat because she will never pay off.

Ahh yes  I point out project boats to my wife Nancy, and regularly say "the trailer is worth $2000 bucks all day long!". Now she asks in advance if the boat comes with a trailer, and she says, "Oh, well, the trailer is worth....."

I have four trailers in the yard and a bunch of boats. I ain't allowed any more.

(temporarily :D )

Its worth what you are willing to pay for it. The trailer is nice! The rest is a what you know it will cost to do. You make your money on the purchase not the sale!

OK John, I feel better now.

I have to say back in 99 my brother and I got the bug to buy a wood boat and restore it. We really didn’t know much about the values and what we should look for and or stay away from. We just seemed to gravitate to Chris Craft.
We found this boat on the internet and it was close to home so we went to look. Someone had started to do work on her but not much. The boat was full of parts and boxes and was calling for help. The original KLC engine was not there but a K was and some of the hardware was missing.( now we know how much the hardware costs)
Anyway we forked out two thousand for the boat and at that time we felt good with our purchase. We ended up working on her for 11 years and ended up with 18 thousand into it including the trailer.
We don’t have the most valuable boat but its very cool and I love to use and show her. This boat will not be having a new owner anytime soon.

I once had a 1957 Deluxe 17 which is basically the same hull save for some tumblehome at the stern, and is decked. I found the construction to be pretty strong...put a blueprinted 350 FWF in it with a cupped 14x14, and it went like gangbusters. These boats have bottom configurations that handle high speeds well. If this wasn't a good boat.....CC would not have made so many. This is the most practical boat CC built. ....and most are used....not trailer queens.
