1969 CC Corvette

Post by Peter M Jardine » Thu Jan 01, 2015 5:22 pm

No connection to it, but a rare boat for sale in Quebec. Only 34 were built, CFXV prefix, and this one is a 427 boat. Very very cool.

Oh Ya Peter, that is surely a very cool boat. It looks like it's going fast just sitting still. The deep V stern hull design is certainly interesting and it appears to be in excellent condition. How big is she and how much $$$.

Thanks Peter. I clicked on the ad, but it's in French and I can't understand a word of it. I was able to figure out that there's no mention on money's. Do you suppose it's free? Anyway, the hull design is certainly a departure from what I'm used to looking at on a mahogany CC. I wonder how well it worked out? Noticed it has trim tabs added. I would love to know more about her performance and sea handling abilities and some historical info about the design. I need an interpreter.

Yes, that is a radical departure from any stern view of a CC hull I have ever seen???? Jim Evans may know?

This design and the 1977 fibreglass version...38 feet?...were designed by Dick Wynne.....soft ride and seaworthy were the trademarks of this boat. I think they only one of the big glass ones...made in Italy. I will look in the guide.

All the ad said is 427 saltwater ready.....I would think this boat is worth somee dough still. It would be an awesome thing to drive.

One of us should contact the owner and get more info. I'd do it,but I don't speak French. The boat looks great in the photos, but it might have a lot of problems. I'm not saying I wish it has problems, but if it does, I'd feel much better about NOT owning it. If it's found to be in perfect condition and fairly priced, I'll need the Cruiser Hot Line immediately.

I spoke to the current owner, who does not speak english well. He bought the boat from the original owner, who had it for over 30 years. The boat has not been in the water for ten years, but was in running condition when lifted out. The motors will need to be gone over for sure, and there will be gas tank issues. The boat has been entirely refiniished outside, but the interior condition is unknown. He is willing to look at reasonable offers. The last one of these I saw listed, the boat was in good condition ready to go.... 60k. I would say this boat is worth about 20k without the engines running. You could easily spend 15k going over the engines and systems.
If someone is interested, I can get a french speaking friend to talk to the owner.

The boat spent time in Florida originally, is enclosed cooling, and the original owner sold the boat when having health issues.

That is a good report Peter.....when was the hull work done? Recent or back in the day? Right on about the tanks being a for sure problem. Logistics of move daunting. Not really a case for my "Cruiser Crisis Hotline" though....might be worth the commitment.

Ya Peter, thanks for making the call. Wonder why she's been on the hard for ten years? Seems a bit odd if the hull was all done up and now it's for sale. Do you suppose the pictures are from ten years ago. Anyway, although I really want the Corvette, I'm not buying it. Already have a cruiser and I'm to damn old to take on another, but it's a worthy project for the right party. John in Va are you making the commitment? It is beautifully designed. Real eye candy for the wooden boat enthusiast. The late 60's were a very interesting era in design. XK 19 and all that. They went fast and they looked fast. Twin 427? That's as good as it gets. You also see the start of aerodynamics in the low streamlined cabin top. And of course that deep V to give it sea handling to go with the power. Just the perfect combination in style power and control. CC put it all together in the Corvette. Peter, I think 15k is probably a little conservative to bring her back to like new. I'm thinking if it sold for 20 it would need another 30 at least. Could be more depending on all the possible wooden boat problems we are so familiar with. You could end up upside down, but this particular boat might actually end up being worth what's into it if the numbers don't get crazy. If I was in the market for a fine 60's CC cruiser, the Corvette would be at the top of the list.

No Joanroy....not me....have one already etc...and TOO OLD is clearly a factor for me as well.

As to the price...I swear there is no market at all for wooden cruisers in my area....zip.....15K? not around here...even for that beauty....and the 427's.....whoa.....gas on the water is still 4 bucks here.

I too wonder about the hull work when? and like you said...how old might the pics be?

Someone should buy and work on this boat but ONLY if they enjoy the work and are able to do 90% of it themselves...that is a small and diminishing crowd.....which includes only me and a few other geezers to battle hardened to relish the fight.

In retrospect, I used the same calculator I use for my own boats  It allows me to keep some semblance of optimism when confronting these tasks. I know all about the too damn old and I already have a boat thing. Yep, this boat would be 30k easy to restore.

I think the current owner spent some time working on it, but he sounds older too. I hope she finds a good home, but I have enough unfinished projects as it is. If I win the lottery I will enjoy owning this boat and watching someone I pay to work on it

Buying another cruiser at this stage of the game would be like stuffing my old body into my bilge. Much easier to get in than to get out.

I guess im the odd man out...looks like a turd to me. The lines are just too Tupperware looking then woody....and those trim tabs on that much deadrise just looks a bit odd.

regarding the above comments:
Joanroy:....getting my old body wedged in between the engines and hull is harder than ever and a real issue. I am a small guy and I am afraid to get in there to change plugs or work on front engine stuff without someone there to cut me out if I get stuck...access varies so much on these older boats.

Ryan: I know what you mean.....my comments about the styling very not a vote in favor...that's for sure...just saying that it is very un-cc looking....I agree it is to futuristic...almost Tupperware shaped....

The tabs on that weird stern shape are something I have never seen.

Ya Ryan, I get the turd thing, after all I am an old fart myself and I favor the 30's and 40's cruiser design and styling, But come on, wouldn't you like to take the helm on that monster and crack open those twin 427's?? I know I would. Might have some resemblance to a Tupperware, but the coolest thing about it is that it's not . It's mahogany, and built in 1969 when glass was already well established. If the corvette was a dog CC wouldn't have built 34 . It would have been one and done. No doubt that was a very pricey boat in 69 and affordable to few. I just think from a historical perspective, it a design beauty of its era and worthy of a save.

Oh definitely worthy of a save..... I would be all over rebuilding those 427's with some modern carburetion, head work, a cam and a balance and blueprint. You could prop that boat up and probably get 40 plus MPH out of her. Yes, the gas mileage would be catastrophic, but all the gas cruisers are at full throttle. The boat does need to be driven at speed. That said, the interior would be small... more express cruiser than 36 feet would normally be. Nice day boat.

My father and I were at the Holland plant taking delivery of a 38 Commander and had the good fortune of viewing the Corvette Hull Prototype with little or no superstructure being tested on Lake Makatawa. We were very impressed at how she ran and looked on plane and how fast she seemed to be. Gotta be a soft ride. I suspect, however, that she is rather tender in a quartering sea, thus the tabs. Never sold one and don't remember hearing of actual performance or sea keeping traits. Love the look.

OK Boat Buzz brothers....here's the deal: I will buy this boat (at the reasonable and heretofore undisclosed price) since I already own "the only Chris Craft 42' Corvette"..the 1955 prototype and world's most rare CC, documented in the CC Essential Guide by Jerry Conrad. You always need a spare!
I like the idea of this boat...and after coming off of a month long major refit of my wooden hull CC....a more modern boat would be a relief. Nothing can possibly scare me now.
I have but one (1) caveat; one of you guys must buy my 1952, 34" CC Double Cabin Fly bridge cruiser. The full narrative was in Bone Yard Boats a couple of years ago and in The Brass Bell. I can send photos to any interested parties. The 52 34' DCBF boat is rare, complete 100%, with KL engines, unmolested, no rot, etc.. I will make you a deal you can't refuse. I must say that even though I am a huge fan of the "Bull Nose" this Corvette is very, Very, VERY COOL. 8)

I want to buy and own them all! I want to purchase my uncles '48 34' Express, Keith's '52 DCFB, a Sea Skiff Cruiser, Studio '63, and about any cruiser that shows up in Bone Yard Boats. It is a good thing that I do not have a lot of money, because if I did I would just spend it all on boats and be broke again. (PS: this list does not even include the XK's, Formula Jr's, and all the other smaller boats I would love to own.)

I actually stumbled across this in the Essentials Guide this morning. The funny thing is I would not have even hesitated on that page, but there is something so striking about the listing picture. I don't know if it is the blue canvas, the finished Mahogany, or just the angle of the shot, but it looks much prettier. :?
