WHAT IS A UNRESTORED 22 FT SEDAN CRUISER WORTH
I JUST GOT A CALL FROM A GUY WITH 22 FT 1953 CHRIS CRAFT SEDAN CRUISER FOR SALE . TRYING TO FIGURE OUT WHAT IT IS WORTH , HAS ENGINE NOT STUCK MISSING CARB ,NO FLOORBOARDS. HAS SEATS HE WANTS 5000 .HAVE NOT SEEN IT .IT IS 7 HOURS AWAY HAS BEEN IN WATER FOR YEARS ,HE SAYS NO ROT.SHOULD I JUMP IN THE TRUCK AND GO AFTER IT. HOW RARE ARE THEY? THANKS

That question is impossible to answer. However, how much is it worth to YOU? If you plan to invest, restore it and turn a profit, I suggest you look at real estate.

It's a boat you have to like. First thing is make sure the front windows open.
Then realize it is more expensive to restore than an open U-22, brings less and is harder to sell.

The 22-foot Custom Sedan is a cool looking boat, if that's what it is: Hull Series S-22. Take a look at in in our archive. Some of the period brochures between 1948-1954 show it. The only other 22' that year was the Express Cruiser (X-22 series), which is also nice, just not as "cool" as the sedan. Welcome aboard the Club and Boat Buzz.

Having restored several boats for the gratification that comes with the finished project, if it gets finished. I took on 2 projects that once into them I realized they were too far gone. (See previous post about x-ray glasses). I quickly learned if you get the boat for nothing you will rarely spend less on it than it is ultimately worth. A grim reality, but true. My present project, a '65, 24' CC sea skiff, I paid 2K on an asking price of 10K (reduced from 18K). I did so because the custom trailer was probably worth it. My restoration budget is 12K.

My point exactly, that boat is a bugger to put a bottom on due to the prep involved, and the hard top issue. Everything figures in, If it is not a U22 hardtop with fold up windshield, and you are over 5'6" is it worth the cost because the cost will be FAR GREATER than finished value

No one ever buy's one of these wood boats as an investment we all know that the hard way, its an emotional attachment.If it grabs you grab that suitcase of cash you will need and go get it

I have a 1946 Gar Wood 22'6" Sedan and my brother in law has a 1953 or '54 22' Chris Craft Custom Sedan, which is what I believe you are looking at. I have ridden in it many times and it is currently under a full restoration - a mild resto-mod with substantial modern V-8 power and skinned hull but otherwise stock in appearance. These are not U 22 Sedans - they are a separate model entirely.
I am 6'0" and have no problem with headroom or space in either the CC or Gar Sedans in this range. I believe the front windows on the CC open, which is an absolute necessity on any sedan for ventilation. I think they are very nicely styled boats and they offer great utility and of course are comfortable in adverse weather conditions.
I would guess a good "user" level 22' Sedan is worth in the $25-$35k range and they are becoming a bit scarce. The very best of them seem to trade in the $50-$60k range, but those are show level examples. They are not the easiest to restore, for reasons pointed out here and the tops can be quite complex if repairs or wood replacement is needed. I would doubt the assertion it has "no rot" - not because I think the seller is untruthful necessarily but because it extremely improbable and he just might not realize it.
They are a handsome boat with a more limited market than an open utility like a U 22. I would say a project boat is not worth much, $5k or less, but the question is nearly impossible to answer without more detailed knowledge of the condition. It sounds like a substantial restoration from what you have mentioned. Pay close attention to the bottom and framing - that is where big costs can be incurred. If you are inexperienced with classic wood boats, I would urge you to have it inspected pre-purchase by a qualified restorer if possible. It might save you a lot of grief.
I have had professionally restored my 22'6" Gar Sedan and a 25' Chris Sportsman Sedan and am watching my brother in laws' 22' Custom project so I am fairly knowledgeable about this process. You need either fairly well developed personal woodworking skills to do it yourself or financial capacity in order to have them restored by someone else in order to do them correctly - take my word for it.

Sorry forgot to comment on numbers. I think they produced around 430 of these boats in total over a period of about 7 years or so (I don't have access to my Essential Guide which provides production numbers). I don't know how many survive, but a 10% survival rate might be a good guess. At your height, you may be at the upper limit of comfort with respect to cabin top headroom. I know in my 25' Sportsman Sedan there is oodles of headroom, but that is an entirely different and much larger boat.
Does this boat come with a trailer? The carb for the engine is easily found, but I think it likely that engine problems beyond the carb are likely lurking. I would pay very little for this boat, based on the very basic information provided. I'd be interested in seeing pictures, if you could post some.

Gr, at 6'4" which is my hight , I can tell you from experience that you will not be happy with this boat if you really plan to use it. You would have to basically go full squat or bend at the wast and squat to get in and it will still be tight. Nice boat to look at and ride in for brief times but at our hight , "User Boat " no way. That's what I ment by 5'6" this is a " user boat " for shorter people remember these were late 40- early 50 boats our "tall" generation was in diapers or starting 1st grade,
