What Shape is the Fuel Dip Stick

If it doesn't pertain to metal, wood, wire or fabric—but it is about vintage Chris-Crafts, ask your question or give your advice here.

What Shape is the Fuel Dip Stick

Post by tuobanur » Sun Jan 03, 2016 2:31 pm

Does anyone know what the shape of the dip stick typically used by Chris Craft was (square, rectangle, triangle, etc.)?
Trying to help out our friends at WB with the matter, made one for my boat in a triangle shape because I liked the look and the ease of reading but I'm not sure that's what was used.

dont have a picture of mine handy but it is very similar looking to those old wood yard sticks. I suspect if you search around here you will find a picture of one. the measurements were labelled at 1/4, 1/2, 3/4, etc. as i recall.

I have an original one, it's about 3/4" square w/ eased edges, made of oak. That is for a cruiser, I am not sure if they were different for runabouts.

Captain, are the marks stamped in the wood or inked?

The lines are stamped into the wood.

My 1952 Sportsman has it's original fuel stick. It's shaped like a yard stick. Not sure what they used on other length boats and tanks but this one is accurate for an 18' boat and 20 gallon tank.

The lines are actually shallow kerf cuts into the wood. The numbers are stamped.

Thanks for the replies.
Do you think the stick, as Chad has posted, was typical for all runabouts without fuel gauges?

something like that was used with the pre war 30 gallon gas tank runabouts, at least.

Chad,

Can you give us some more information ? I am about to make one.

Type of wood and finish would be very helpful.

Thanks

Mine is mahogany (factory scrap?) It was dry, brittle and faded when I found it in the boat (I almost tossed it). It did not appear to have any finish or stain. But who knows? Years of dipping it in gas could have stripped it clean. I wiped it with some thinned varnish and mahogany stain so I could see the markings. If you remake them, double the thickness so it's stronger. Mine keeps snapping at the 1/2 tank line. I don't use it anymore, I keep it stored in a tube with my stern flag pole.

I transferred the measurements to a dowel and use that now.

Mind is made from some scrap mahogany with several coats of CPES then steel wool smooth to a nice satin finish. So far it has held up well to the gas and should last for quite some time.

If the dip stick guy from back in the day at CC could have imagined his work would garner such discussion and interest in 2016, l'm sure he'd be thrilled and be going to the boss for a raise. I understand the rest of the crew at Algonac called him "Dip Stick".

After searching the forum here and reading through the Woody Boater blogs, consensus is that Northwood Boatworks is THE place for faithful reproductions of pre-war CC fuel dipsticks. So having just spoken to Dave who very kindly looked up the tank size from my hull number, I am now the proud owner of one of his excellent reproduction fuel dipsticks for my 1936 CC 19' Runabout.

Man, I LOVE this forum :)

Congrats! I have them and they are fantastic details. On Stinky which is a Prerestoric boat, I dirt stained the stick so it looks old and ratty to match the boat. Looks fantastic.
