reverse lockout for trailer brakes

I recently had a reverse lockout solenoid installed on my surge brake trailer. Sure makes a difference when backing up. No more brake drag. I wonder why the manufactures do not put these on.

Mine came with one. I have a 5 pin flat connector. The 5th pin is 12 volts for the solenoid to allow for reverse with no brakes. Can' t move the trailer back otherwise unless you mechanically lock it out on the tongue.

I have the solenoid as well but have had trouble backing up a grade. How do you mechanically lock out the brakes? That would be handy!

According to the actuator manual you put the safety pin in the side hole of the tongue portion of the acuator.

Jim,
I came across this. I did not know this but there are two types of lockout solenoids. A stop flow and a reverse flow.The reverse flow sounds like the solution for backing up grades. Check out this PDF.

The reverse lockout is for disc brake systems, Surge brake drum systems (newer) use brake pads that are "free backing" and the lockout is not necessary.
FYI...I replaced my older Tie Down model 66 due to the fact that blew the seals out of the master cylinder. I did this by backing up my driveway with a slight and I mean slight up hill grade. I had the blocking solenoid. This system (disc brakes) came with the boat/trailer that I purchased used. I contacted the manufacturer, they said I needed to manually lock the actuator when backing on any grade. When I stated that there was nothing in the manual about that I got no reply.
Demco makes a brake actuator that is a complete system that allows you to back up grades without manually locking it out. I have used the Demco for three years without any issues.

On my type of actuator you can see how the forward part pushes into the rear part. I have used a large c-clamp to keep the front part from pushing into the rear. Not pretty but my shop has a steep driveway.
