48 Commuter on eBay

Post by Bill Basler » Mon Oct 08, 2007 8:22 am

I saw this one a few days back, but have just gotten around to posting here. There is a 48-foot Commuter on eBay that needs to fall into the right hands. If anyone of you are able of know of anyone who is able to pick this boat up, she definitely needs to get her restoration headed in the right direction very soon.

I've been watching that auction since it went on. There's two old Scripts sixes in there too. That's way to much project for me but its here in MI for the taking. It might not be that bad. Still, I bet you dump $100k into and still not be done.

It reminds me of Ragtime. Ragtime was fairly similar b ut bigger. She was 65'.

It will be a sad loss if someone of means does not pick this up. Amazing how people will spend millions on some new plastic and not want to spend 500K-750K to have a one of a kind that will last another century.

Having done some research on these I feel close to the subject and just now saw the post and e-bay auction. Maybe someone out there know of that special person who has the desire and means.

According to The Essential Guide there were only 5 of those ever built. If anyone was watching the auction and saved the contact info on their "My eBay" the seller can still be reached via eBay. If someone did, would you consider relaying a message for them to contact the Club at [email protected] please? The seller may re-list it as well.

I was going to click "Watch this Item" before I was called away to meet my new twin Grand Daughters who arrived at 7:02 and 7:20pm this evening. Kirby 6 lb, 2 oz and Lillian 6 lb 7 oz. Two peas in a pod for sure.

I will try to contact the seller and also suggest they donate it to Interntational Yacht Restoration School in Newport, I'm sure they would love to have it and you know it will get the treatment it deserves there, and upon completion will be available to the open market for purchase. They will at least get tax credit and save the boat.

I contacted the seller on this boat. The reserve was set at 80-some thousand (I can't remember the exact number).

The boat was being represented by an auction house that is in the process of contacting the eBay bidders via email. Apparently the boat will go out to the highest bid, and it was disclosed to me that the reserve would be lowered to $60K.

It's a fair amount of money for sure, especially based on the amount of effort that it will take to bring her back to life, but this is really a rare boat with great historic importance.

What this boat does not need is to spend another 20 years under a canvas tarp, and I expressed this to the auction house. He indicated that he had a fairly serious potential buyer in Michigan.

Let's hope for the best. If anyone is seriously interested, let me know and I'll help out in any way we can.
