Lifting in a boat house
Should I use the lifting rings to pull up in a boathouse or should I use straps? I have a 17 ft Deluxe

Welcome to The Buzz Rip,
Your lifting rings are really for temporary use and you should really check them out real close b/4 using them for lifting. Slings are better for hanging. For long term storage it's always better to set her down on some timbers or a cradle.

Boats are to be made of wood, otherwise, God would have grown fiberglass trees.

Thank you for the response. I purchased the 17 deluxe in 2013 and had a 5200 bottom installed in 2013 and over the winter had the boat rewired in a shop. Now I have in a boathouse where the boat resides year round now. I can either have the boat lifted by the rings for 10-15 minutes or have straps put underneath for the same 10-15 minutes. Once it is lifted it is lowered on to wood beams across the slip,
I just want to make sure there is no damage to the hull
Cheers!

Sounds like a perfect setup.

Use spreader bars when lifting by straps.

If you have the depth, I would build a submersible cradle just like a boat lift, with supports running lengthwise.

Lifting it by the rings will be fine. These boats hung for decades by the rings. Since you had a new bottom put on everything should be good with the structure for the lifting rings. Lifting by straps can cause damage to the edge of the chines.

Re: Lifting in a boat house
I am restoring my 16' 1948 runabout. It was lifted by its rings and left hanging 6 months every year until it was retired at age 30. Winters were on a trailer.
The frame at the fore ring is fastened to the keel by 2 bolts each side. The frames were split there.
There is a lot of structure in that area with the bottom planks fastened to the frame and keel.
My conclusion is that with a new bottom and new frames the boat can be hung on the lifting rings without any problem. Still I did strengthen the ring support by extending the board that the ring rod mounts to clear to the chines.
I'd say, with confidence, that it could be left hanging by the lifting eyes.
I won't be doing that. I'll build a lifting frame like a trailer because that is easy in my boat house and is better. I don't believe it is necessary.
