relocating u22 in the middle of restoration

Winterizing? Summerizing? Covering? Trailering? If it is about a boat out of water put it here.

relocating u22 in the middle of restoration

Post by HappenMaker » Tue Mar 17, 2015 12:55 pm

My U22 Sportsman is currently upside down with the bottom removed. I need to move it to a new location, i am nervose to strap around the boat to lift it. i would not want to concave the hull sides. is it possible to lift from the Stringers and set it on a trailer. the boat sits like this now

I'd try the stringers, but only lift an inch or two and measure if there is any deflection

Put some cross bracing in also.
Boats are to be made of wood, otherwise, God would have grown fiberglass trees.

I'd put some cross timbers under the gunwales .....somehow.....then wrap the straps around the ends of those and use some 2x4's or something as spreader bars. converging at the keel just enough to have no contact from the straps
keeping the straps off the boat entirely......no more weight than that I would bet you could use 2/6's on the flat as the cross timbers???? and only need two of them well spaced.....
I just don't like the idea of pulling from any small area of the scantlings/boat itself .....

Lifting it by the stringers will cause no problems with the hull. I have moved 5 or 6 boats that I've bought where owners have started restorations and lost interest. I set the boat on a flat bed trailer with padding supporting the front and rear deck. If the boat is in decent shape meaning not full of rot it will be fine for the trip. Just don't let sit like that for weeks on end. If it has a lot of rot you will need to do lots of bracing to keep its shape.
