No Seacocks on a CC Connie

Winterizing? Summerizing? Covering? Trailering? If it is about a boat out of water put it here.

No Seacocks on a CC Connie

Post by davewann » Mon Nov 30, 2015 9:01 pm

Hello,

My first post so I hope I do it right!

I just bought a 30' CC Constellation with twin 283s. Neither of the thu-hulls have seacocks or strainers. The manual from 1964 shows the seacocks and strainers as an option.

Question: Can this model be winterized in the water, St. Louis, MO., without the seacocks?

I have had (4) cruisers, all CCs, and this is the only one with no seacocks.

Thanks for the opportunity to address you all!!

Just pull all the drain plugs on the engine.

I don't know how cold it gets in St. Louis so the answer is less direct. Just draining the engine will protect the engine, but on another thread someone mentioned seeing boats sink because the water inlet froze. They suggested blowing compressed air out through the intake and closing the sea cock. Obviously it would have to get very cold to freeze the water inlet and it is imposible to close the sea cock if they are not there.

American Beauty, a '58 38' Connie, did not have sea cocks when she came into our care. It was one of the first things I changed. Can't believe they were never installed over all those years.

No seacocks on any below water line thru hull is contrary to ACBS code, and an invitation to your boat sinking if a hose springs a leak. Install seacocks, and carry a number of cone shaped plugs in wood in case of any sea cock failure. Check sea cocks yearly for full function.

Good advise Peter but I was unaware that the ACBS had such guidelines...It would not be the first time, though.

By any chance are you referring to ABYC (American Boat & Yacht Council)?

I have never heard of a cc cruiser coming without seacocks? Over the years I have put off replacing seacocks that were stuck and not closeable.....that too is a risky business. To repeat others....you need seacocks at least....and strainers, while the best are very pricey, are a near must as well. Be careful and take heed on all of this.

To quote my late surveyor as he pointed at shaft logs and and other through hull fittings... "your boat floats on that"!

My '67 35' Sea Skiff Corinthian does not have engine sea cocks or strainers. My surveyor always points that out to on his periodic serveys. I just ask him to try to touch the thru-hulls. The are under the engines and not touchable.

Something to consider is to put in emergency water pick ups. When you install your ball valve you can use a 3 way valve and run a solid pipe to the center of the hull by the keel. If you boat gets a hole in it to big for the bilge pumps to keep up you put the ball valve in the 3 position and you engine acts as a pump pumping water out of the bilge through the strainer and into the engine. Hopefully you'll never have to use it. This is the only picture I could find, really should have a strainer in line.
