I just purchased my first Classic Chris Craft, a 1956 Continental 18' in unrestored mostly original condition. In doing some research here the hull number should start with CL-180-xxx. The story that came with the boat is that it was originally a base commander's personal launch in Long Beach, CA. It was originally fitted with a straight 6, but later upgraded to a 283.
I can't find the hull id plate, but the title lists the hull id number as 4R27V163692.
Does that make any sense?

Welcome to the Buzz.
The # on the title was issued by the DMV. You should be looking for that CL-180-XXX (the X's representing three digits in the production #) stamped on one of the engine stringers and elsewhere on the boat as you disassemble things.

Boats are to be made of wood, otherwise, God would have grown fiberglass trees.

Thanks guys, I found it : CL-18-230
Now to order the build card and information packet. I took the boat to the local expert and he confirmed that the bottom has been sheathed with plywood. He suggested putting it in the water still on the trailer and see what happens. If it's not too bad I may just lightly sand it, give it a coat of CPES and paint, then enjoy it for a couple of years.
