Hull registration no

Post by srlittin » Sun Dec 14, 2014 8:52 pm

Upon sanding the hull sides, we found an old number on the starboard front. 38R 1952. The boat is a 1957 30 ft constellation sold new in Detroit. Any ideas if this is a hull or ship no.

Looks like the old Coast Guard numbering scheme. Coast Guard small boat registration was turned over to each state sometime in the 1950s? My 1932 Hacker was 13P152. State registrations use abbreviations like MD for Maryland or AZ for Arizona, etc. Also, when there were only USCG numbers, no yearly sticker was used. I once spent many hours trying to trace my Hacker number, but was unable to establish a connection with any sort of archives; apparently the coasties did not archive these numbers, or maybe they are mouldering away as hard copy in some obscure government basement. Did this boat spend any time under Canadian Registry?

It's a Coast Guard issued registration number. The first two numbers were the District the boat was registered in. Here's one on an old Gar-Wood. Never found a way to track them.

I only know that the "27" prefix was for southern California boats and "28" for northern California boats.

Jim's pic was taken off Catalina Island. That is Preston Foster behind the wheel. This is Streamliner #2 from 1938 delivered to Newport Beach. The first two had canvas decks (this one and Blythe Spirit in NY). My dad and I own Streamliner #3, Empress.

Thanks for all the replies. The number is only on the starboard side. The current Ohio registration was first given to this boat in 2001. Prior to this the constellation was in Michigan.
More research will be needed.
As far as I know, the boat wasn't in Canada.

Check your hull card. "Government" numbers were sometimes applied at factory and noted on the card. Many hull cards have a check box entitled "Gov't number". Have seen similar format in Canada.

Thanks all, Greg, according to the hull sheet, no government no. Was assigned.
Jim, looks similar to the copy that you posted.
Is there anywhere to research these documents?

Steve,
I tried. The first number is the Coast Guard district. The letter and the last numbers were the registration numbers.
Had a friend in the Coast Guard and called Chicago. Both efforts ran in to a dead end.

i tried that on my boat a number of years ago. Unfortunately, by that time, the coast guard had thrown away all their old hand made records that related to the early issuance of numbers. c'est la vie.

I just picked up a 1954 18' sportsman out of a backyard. This is some of the papers I got with it. The original order sheet from the dealer to Chris Craft and the coast guard numbers. The boat is rough. I'll probably cut it up unless someone has some interest in it. It also has receipts for the engine being rebuilt in 1987.

Do you have any photos of the boat or hardware?

Here are a couple of pictures. I all the hardware except windshield brackets, bowlight and stern pole. The chrome is actually pretty decent.

Poor girl, she does look a bit rough.

I hope somebody who has what it takes to save her will rise to the challenge. I love everything about my U-18. It's a great handling boat, it's easy to trailer, and has the best lines (IMHO) of the entire Sportsman line-up.

Chad,

You should find some cleaner water to boat in. That must be near a food dye plant, way too blue.
