Titling My Boat

Post by tuobanur » Thu Jan 29, 2015 4:13 pm

When I purchased my boat, 17 years ago, I never received the title just a bill-of-sale. The owner said he had it but died not long after, at the time I didn't think it was a big deal but...
Now that its almost complete I'm ready to do something about it, I could just register it as a home built but I would rather title it with the original hull number. Can anyone give me some pointers on how I might do this???

Check with your DNR. In Minnesota for example, we only need a bill of sale to register a watercraft if it was built before 1972.

In Illinois the DNR police have to come out and inspect it. This just started a few years ago. They find the hull number and run it. If it does not come up in the system they give you a form to send in for title and registration. Different in every state.

I learned the hard way on this one when I titled my 1939 Chris in the Peoples Republic of Maryland. I had a bill of sale, but let it sit for a year before applying for a title. State penalized me a percentage of the purchase price for each day past the first thirty days of possession, and it was a salty "penalty" amount. Just another tax in my opinion. And, for anyone out there planning to construct a boat from scratch, what some states call a custom-build, you will experience big brother government at its worst when you pay a tax based on money spent on the build. There are ways around this kind of extortion, but one has to be willing to be, shall I say "creative" when undertaking these kind of endeavors. Keep in mind, also, that any creative paperwork can lead to later headaches and legal trouble when it comes to insurance claims, or as a result of DNR pull-overs and subsequent inspections. By the way, building a custom boat goes beyond state regs. because the serial number you are assigned is based on Federal regulations. CQ

This is one of several companies that can get you a new title. What happens is that you kind of "sell" them the boat and they register it in a state like Alabama which has no titles, just registrations. They then "sell" it back to you with the good Alabama registration and a bill of sale and a transfer document that you can take to your state and get a valid title. May cost $300 but sometimes that is the only way. I have done this several times and it works well.

Here in the great state of North Carolina...you only have to have the old set of registration numbers from the previous state, but like someone said it just takes a call to the DNR to find out.

Oddly enough, in Michigan they seem to 'retire' old MC numbers. I have two boats that haven't been titled in over 20 years that were left on my property when I bought it. When I went to the SOS, they said they no longer had records and that I needed to get VIN numbers or hull numbers and they would issue new MC numbers. I went away, and still haven't come back with the numbers to get them titled. Reading the previous post, I should get on that. I have 3 now that I haven't titled, including my '56 Continental.

Is there any value to keeping the registration to a boat that was too far gone to restore?

I purchased a current registered boat for the trailer, but the the boat itself was a wreck. It's gone but I still have the title for a 1965 Chris-Craft Super Sport.

John, It's not a bad idea to keep track of boats that no longer exist. Some day someone may be interested in which ones not to look for. I'm sure that Don Ayers wishes that some of the pre-war Barrelbacks whereabouts (or lack thereof) were now known. If you have the hull number, put it on the Hull Registry with a note that she no longer exists.

Well guys and gals, got my title today!!!

After all of the debate it came down to talking to the right person and I was very lucky, lucky enough to get hooked up with Ms. Rivers and I have to say she is one of the best, the nicest, most knowledgeable, and understanding person I have ever dealt with.
Basically once I explained my situation she had me fill out the DNR Watercraft/Outboard Motor Application and a Certified True Bill of Sale form, sent a copy of the original receipt from back when I purchased the boat, pictures of the port and starboard sides, transom, and the hull number as it's stamped in the boat. Paid a the fee for the registration and taxes (total of $41.00) and bam!! it was done, I now have a title with the original hull number.

The right person on the right day in the right place with the right attitude is a lot of ducks (rights) to get in a row in some instances. Congratulations!

What is this DNR mentioned here? Where I come from that means "do not resuscitate", not a pleasant thing. In NY boat registrations are handled through the DMV.

I thought it was the Department of Nothing Relevant (DNR) which kinda fits. In Missouri the DNR is Department of Natural Resources but we also have the DMV for titles and licensing.

Here in SC anything to do with a boat is handled by the Department of Natural Resources (DNR), but I like Jim's response also. :D

We don't have Titles for boats here in Maine. For decades they were handled by the DMV (Department of Motor Vehicles), but someone decided it should be changed to BMV (Bureau of Motor Vehicles), not sure what that was all about.

After a decade of being unregistered DMV wanted to issue new numbers for Yorktown. If I recall correctly my Sister in Law fought that battle, she doesn't lose very often so we still have the original ME 614 S. :D
