Cracked Ice Gauge Panel Treatment
I am looking for an original photo of the prewar Cracked Ice panel. I plan on applying the treatment to this panel for a 1937 Chris Craft 25 foot Roll Deck and would like to get as close as possible to the original look. I did a panel for a 22 foot Custom in 2000 and just want to get some other ideas.
I also need the switches for this panel.
Thanks, Steve

Re: Cracked Ice Gauge Panel Treatment
steve, we had a discussion of this about 4 years ago on the buzz. I know there is a picture in the archives of this and i recall two or three different instrument restorers chimned in. I wasnt able to find anything with a quick search but if you take the time I am sure you will find it. good luck.

Mark Clawson does them. He did the one for a customers 19 Barrelback several years ago. It came out perfect.

Re: Cracked Ice Gauge Panel Treatment
Thanks Tom, I looked at the pictures in the Bell and feel the pattern on the cracked ice panels were very intricate and detailed. I wonder if the process involved a photography treatment, or an engraved plate that applied the silver?
I would love the best possible black and white photo in existence of a cracked ice panel . Then it would be possible to mimic the patterns and details within the scope and field of the panel.

Re: Cracked Ice Gauge Panel Treatment
i would guess this was a stewart-warner panel? if so, has anyone talked to them?

Aside from slightly better versions of the '06 Brass Bell photos, there is this one...

Hi Brian, on another subject I see you have a l7' barrelback in the shop. can you answer the question as to whether the dash was stained dark walnut at any time during its production run? there is a thread with that question floating around here. Don A. answered the question re the 40-42 19' custom. thx.

Re: Cracked Ice Gauge Panel Treatment
Look at the detail in the edge of this 1937 panel, I have a suspicion that the silver finish was applied over the black from a take off of a hand engraved plate. The small area of original finish does not allow one to see the complete pattern, or to deduct if the pattern repeats its self. Looking at old paper money and stock certificates of that era , one can see similar engravings.
I hope a direct head on picture will surface of a original panel that can show the small details and pattern. The panel I have in my hand has details to .005 inch .
Thanks to everyone for their input, this is a mystery.
